Comfort is a prison when it holds you back from the heights you’re capable of reaching. Rappelling at Poison Spider Mesa Trail and off-roading at Hell’s Revenge with the ladies were one for the books!!! šŸ§—šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøā›°ļø (Slides 2 and 6 were rappelling off a 110ft cliff)

I first heard of Amy Sherald when news broke years ago that she had been commissioned to paint the official portrait of Michelle Obama for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (with Kehinde Wiley for Barrack’s). And after the painting was finally unveiled, it felt like an iconic moment that brought contemporary portraiture into mainstream conversation. The other night, we visited her show ā€œAmerican Sublimeā€ before Friday Jazz began at the museum. Needless to say, she is one of the most important contemporary artists today. She redefined Black representation in portraiture, painting ordinary people with a sense of dignity that feels timeless and modern. Grayscale skin tones, controlled compositions, flattened backgrounds, the fashion… all instantly recognizable as Amy’s. I like the emotional subtlety of her work… quiet, restrained, deeply human. Seeing her paintings in person is definitely in my top art experiences. #AmySherald #ContemporaryArt #Portraiture @asherald

Someone once said, you are only as old as your doubts and fears, and as young as your hopes and dreams. Here’s to hopes and dreams that defy age! šŸ·Grateful for this life and the people in it šŸ™ #birthdayweekend

Appropriation—when one artist builds off another. And when you see them side by side, they carry a different weight. A boy and his dog—but two completely different worlds. Basquiat’s is full of life: bold colors evoking the warmth of summer and the playful energy of a boy and his dog by a fire hydrant. Banksy then flips it—the color’s gone, the background turns dystopian gray, and the boy is being searched by police like a criminal suspect, the dog pushed to the side. Same image, different reality. What do you think Banksy is getting at? #Basquiat #Banksy #contemporaryart

From architecture to abstraction, walking through the Hirshhorn and the National Gallery of Art felt like rediscovering form and sculpture all over again. Such a perfect day in DC! @hirshhorn @ngadc

A night across Latin America with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as we immersed ourselves into Afro-Caribbean, Central, and South American music. What a treat to watch Nicaraguan conductor Giancarlo Guerrero @giancarloguerrero.conductor lead the orchestra with such fire. My biggest highlight was hearing Venezuelan trumpet virtuoso Pacho Flores @pachofloresofficial perform his own composition, along with a stunning piece by Mexican composer Arturo Marquez—followed by the intensity of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla’s tango symphony. It was such another beautiful night of music—one that truly makes me feel alive! šŸŽŗ šŸŽ» šŸŽ¼ šŸ’™

Attended the Members Opening Night for the Noguchi exhibit at the High Museum of Art. Noguchi’s work spanned sculpture, furniture, lighting, architecture, gardens, and public spaces. I’ve always seen his work as a series of contradictions—subtle and bold, traditional and modern. A 20th-century sculptor who shaped a whole way of thinking about art and design! šŸ· #isamunoguchi #noguchi #sculptor #midcenturymodern

A piece that pulls me in every time. The texture, medium, depth—a meditation on the aftermath of destruction (one that feels especially resonant these days) and the fragility of what once felt absolute. Nothing quite like an Anselm Kiefer. Remains of the Sun (Sonnenreste),1997, emulsion, acrylic, shellac, burnt clay, and sand on canvas #AnselmKiefer #ContemporaryArt
