popped into hennessey+ingalls today and spotted 7 echelon collabs on display, from throughout our 22 years and nearly 800 books! each reminds me of a story of art, design, process, struggle, discovery, and most importantly, friends, mentors, thinkers, print lovers, etc i’ve made along the way. plus, hennessey was one of the first real book stores that sparked my mind, back in my hometown of santa monica. and who remembers its cameo in heat?! books build community. these objects connect us. also, the logo was designed by my dear friend and design mentor, michael hodgson. partner at ph.d, where it all started for me in 1993.

#workarchive [2023 STUDENT WORK] Screen printed (full-bleed) T-shirt to compare the work and processed of Irma Boom (@irma_boom_amsterdam ), and Kimberly Varella (@contentobject ). Two book designers I look up to. Both in lineage with each other. That year @martinesyms visited CalArts and said something along the lines of “nobody buys books at book fairs anymore they buy t-shirts”. It was perfect timing to hear, cause I didn’t want to make a publication about other publications. I was inspired by @bootboyzbiz , and their informative heavily researched bootleg reproductions. @heart.lore ’s Merch design practice was also a big inspiration to me! As they often do full bleed screen printed t-shirt prints and had an informative workshop on how to make one in photoshop, which helped me figure out my process for production! I ended up using illustrator and dropped a photo of the blank in there (to scale) and laid everything out. I don’t have a picture of my silkscreen, but that was a crazy process. I think I was working with 3 screens (front, back, accents)???? A lot of tape, a lot of mess. 2 colors, and I tried to throw glitter on there but it wouldn’t stay haha. 📸🌎❤️ Called “a poet with a camera” by Edward Steichen, Robert Frank (1924–2019) was one of many artists who searched for creative freedom in postwar Paris. It was while he was living in the city in 1949 that Frank produced a seminal volume in his oeuvre: a rare, personal photobook made for his then-girlfriend, artist Mary Frank (née Lockspeiser). In Mary’s Book, the photographer chronicled his time in the city with his poetic, insightful and inquisitive eye, and experimented for the first time with combining text and image. This singular object proved an important bookmaking exercise for Frank, and remains as evidence of his maturing artistic vision. Mary’s Book reproduces this love letter in full for the first time, accompanied by insightful essays from leading scholars. This facsimile clothbound volume, inscribed “this is for you” in Frank’s handwriting, re-creates the series of unbound pages nestled within one another, filled with handwritten notes and hand-cut prints.
