This is Buckland splice a project that explores the idea of off grid. Adapting an existing outbuilding into a rain harvesting, power generating and biodiversity boosting generator for the existing cottage.
The cottage is revitalised via series of interventions: a Cross laminated extension, new floors and a roof
A sneak peak of our recently completed project on Talbot Road in Highgate. The exposed structural timber frame brings rhythm to the space - defining functional zones - and sails past the glazing line creating sheltered outdoor areas. The material palette prioritises texture with beautiful undulating external ceramic cladding and lime plaster, rich timbers and soft fabrics inside. We are looking forward to a professional photoshoot later this summer once the garden is bedded in - watch this space!

The design is for a cantilever with a slim steel cable to tie down the back to keep the column small.
The risk was that wind uplift would flip the loads, pushing the cable into compression - not good.
The solution was to add marble inserts into the free end of the beam web to provide enough ballast to counteract wind uplift ensuring the cable is always in tension.
I have to admit, it sounded mad to us at first too but as it unfolded and we all worked through the design, it made more and more sense and has ended up quite fantastic.
