In Memoriam: Craig, a Super Tusker of Amboseli National Park
1972-2026
In the early hours of this morning, Amboseli National Park, Kenya, and the global conservation community lost one of their most significant living symbols. Craig, a legendary super tusker renowned for his immense, ground-sweeping tusks and calm, dignified presence, passed away at the age of 54.
Born in January 1972 to Cassandra, the revered matriarch of the CB family, Craig belonged to a lineage closely studied for decades. He was among the last remaining super tuskers in Africa—an exceptionally rare class of bull elephants whose tusks each exceed 45 kilograms. With only a handful of such elephants left, Craig represented a living link to Africa’s ecological heritage.
Beyond his physical stature, Craig was admired for his remarkably composed temperament. His tolerance of researchers, photographers, and visitors made him a powerful ambassador for Amboseli and a visible example of the success of long-term conservation and community-based protection.
Craig fathered several calves, ensuring the continuation of his genetic lineage and behavioral traits. Although concerns had grown following reports of illness in November, his passing marks a profound loss. Amboseli has lost not merely an elephant, but an enduring icon whose legacy will continue through science, conservation, and memory. #craig #tusker #amboseli #elephant #kenya #loss
At #CITES #CoP20 , Parties took a decisive stand for #wildlife #conservation by rejecting every proposal to open or #permit commercial #trade in #rhino #horn and #elephant #ivory #stockpiles.
The #global ban remains fully intact — a critical #safeguard for species under relentless pressure.
Under the current framework, countries must continue to mark, register, secure, and report all stockpiled rhino horn and ivory to the CITES Secretariat.
What they cannot do is sell them on the international #market .
CoP20’s decision reinforces a key scientific consensus:
Legalizing trade would escalate demand, facilitate laundering of poached products, and further endanger wild rhino and elephant populations.
Protecting these species requires unwavering commitment — and this decision reflects exactly that. Share your thoughts in the comments 👇🏻
On the eve of #cop20 #cities meetings to discuss “sustainable trade” and 50 years after #tigers gained the world’s highest protection, trafficking in these iconic species is alarmingly increasing 🐅🌏
@traffic_wltrade issued an game changing #data analysis that provides evidence for increaeee seizures and sharp shift towards the trade in whole tigers. In fact, 2023 was one of the worst years on record. Criminal networks are adapting. Demand persists. And therefore, #conservation strategies must step up enforcement and tactics.

Ever wondered what a lion translocation entails?
These operations are highly coordinated conservation interventions designed to enhance genetic diversity, stabilize population dynamics, and strengthen ecosystem resilience. From immobilization and veterinary assessment to transport logistics and post-release monitoring, each stage is meticulously planned to ensure animal welfare and ecological benefit. Lion translocations offer a striking example of how evidence-based management and collaborative stewardship can shape the future of Africa’s apex #predators .
In an exciting step for lion conservation, two male lions have been successfully relocated to the uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. 🦁🌿
The lions were relocated from Lapalala Wilderness and were transported by vehicle on which should have been a 12 hour journey and ended up being 15 hours due to an accident and heavy traffic along the way.
Relocations like this play a critical role in maintaining the long-term genetic health of South Africa’s #lion population. Introducing new individuals from other reserves strengthens the populations genetic integrity and contributes to building resilient lion populations across protected areas.
This collaborative effort between @lapalala_wilderness , @ezemvelokznwildlife and @africanwildlifevets highlights the importance of coordinated conservation work to secure the future of Africa’s apex predators.

🐆🔬 Advancing Cheetah Conservation Through #gps Monitoring
The long-term survival of endangered #cheetah populations depends on our ability to understand their spatial ecology and social structures. Deploying GPS collars is a critical research tool that enables conservation scientists to gather high-resolution data on:
📍 Movement patterns and home-range use
📊 Habitat preferences and migratory corridors
👥 Family dynamics, including maternal ranges, cub survival, and coalition behavior
🛡️ Human–wildlife conflict risk zones and areas requiring targeted protection #hwc
These data allow us to identify priority habitats, monitor population stability, and develop evidence-based #management strategies. With fewer than 7,000 individuals remaining in the wild, such monitoring represents an essential component of effective species recovery planning.
Each collar deployed contributes directly to informed conservation action and the safeguarding of this #iconic #species. Reach out to us if you’d like to take part in this important project and #help us increase our #conservation #impact
Legal Shifts in South Africa’s Rhino Horn Trade 🦏🇿🇦
Recent judicial developments have reshaped the policy landscape surrounding rhino horn trade in South Africa.
Since 2017, domestic trade in rhino horn has been legally permitted following the Constitutional Court’s decision to overturn the 2009 moratorium on procedural grounds. However, international trade remains restricted under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
In November 2025, the Northern Cape High Court ruled that horn derived from captive-bred rhinos may be exported under specific regulatory and permit conditions. The court emphasized that authorities must not arbitrarily deny export permits when applicants meet established conservation and compliance criteria.
This ruling reopens a longstanding debate: Can regulated trade provide sustainable funding for conservation and private reserve management, or might it inadvertently stimulate illegal markets and poaching pressure?
From a conservation perspective, the path forward demands rigorous oversight, transparent monitoring systems, and an evidence-based approach that prioritizes rhino population recovery and long-term ecosystem resilience over short-term economic gains.
@conservation_beyond_borders remains committed to saving the #rhino whole working with local, national, and international relevant parties.

A fascinating lesson about #animal #behaviour
In wildlife conservation, veterinary treatment of large animals like rhinos is critical for their survival, especially in cases of injury, illness, or preventive care such as dehorning or medication for diseases. Keg treatment, in this context, typically refers to administering necessary medical care, often involving sedation or restraint, to ensure both the safety of the animal and the conservation team. These procedures are standard in wildlife reserves and national parks, where rhinos face threats from poaching, disease, and habitat pressures.
The baby rhino in this scenario exhibits a natural, protective behavior that is well-documented in rhinoceros species. Young rhinos, especially calves, form strong bonds with their mothers and may attempt to intervene or shield them when they perceive a threat. This instinctive response reflects both the intelligence and social awareness of rhinos, highlighting the importance of maternal care in their early development. Such behaviors are crucial for conservationists to understand, as they influence how interventions are carried out safely without causing undue stress to the animals.WildlifeConservation #RhinoProtection #AnimalBehavior #VeterinaryCare #wildliferescue #rhino #baby #cute
🌊✨ **A Heartfelt Connection with the Ocean’s Gentle Giants** ✨🌊
What an awe-inspiring experience it is to witness a #whale #shark gliding effortlessly through the water from the sky, a true testament to the beauty of our oceans. Swimming free in its natural habitat.
In Israel, it is #illegal to #fish for whale sharks. They are classified as a protected and #endangered species, signifying the urgent need to safeguard their existence. Tragically, this #whaleshark met its fate on the shores of Gaza. 💔
Did you know that whale sharks are not whales at all? They are, in fact, the largest species of shark and the biggest fish on the planet! Despite their size, they are gentle giants 🐋🌊. With their calm demeanor, they peacefully filter-feed on small organisms like plankton and krill, posing no threat to humans.
Let’s celebrate these extraordinary creatures and advocate for their protection. Together, we can ensure that future generations will also have the chance to marvel at their beauty. 🌍❤️ #marineecosystem #Conservation #ProtectOurOceans #GentleGiants 📸ynet
