Positioned along the topography of a steep hillside, Lautner’s Castle has been carefully restored by @connerperryarchitects , whose work builds on an array of cylindrical stone turrets along the south face. Both structural and architectural, these forms illustrate Lautner’s philosophy of natural materials, blending stone, steel, glass and wood in a harmonious relationship with the landscape and reinforcing the home’s enduring modernist architecture. With extensive experience working on Lautner properties, including the Sheats-Goldstein residence, principals Kristopher Conner and James Perry began the restoration in 2019, introducing modern enhancements that meet the needs of a 21st-century family lifestyle while safeguarding the original architecture. Inside, a wide curving hallway and ribbed wooden ceiling span the entire upper floor, while copper elements placed on top of the beams replace the white painted metal, allowing materials to age more congruently with the house. Working with the pool’s original structural engineering by Lautner collaborator Andrew Nasser, the architects carved out an expansive deck beneath the pool, transforming an area previously inaccessible. Navigating the generous landscape element remained one of the project’s greatest challenges, ensuring the restoration did not detract from the architecture. As in Lautner’s most significant works, the relationships between human being and space, space and nature remain central, an ethos carefully preserved at Lautner’s Castle.
