As many of you know, I’m obsessed with books and magazines. I’ve worked in, for, and around them for over 10 years.
I’ve taken the past 6 months to think long and hard about what printed matter MATTERS right now. It’s a time when everything I love and have worked for feels hollow, if not actively harmful or crumbling.
One result of this pause and rethinking is now here: Starters, a magazine of new design storytelling that brings together my two loves — literature and design.

Magazzino and Manitoga have been two of my great loves since NYU gave me a couple hundred dollars as an undergrad to find poetry. Plus, if it weren’t for Nivola, Tiam and I may not have met.
Humbled to write about the first solo show of Algernon Miller. It gave me a moment to reflect on a movement not my own; not for me. But I found lots of riches in black oil paint and the sweeping sounds of the gallery custodian.
