I finished recording my new EP, Harder Not Smarter. I’m just mixing it and putting the final touches on it. It’ll be out at the end of May on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp.

My dad passed away on Tuesday. There’s a number of things I would like to say about the impact he had on my life and development, but I’ll just mention here that he’s why I’m a musician. Not a performer, not why I use gameboys, or even write about what I write, but my ability to think in music and even become obsessive over what can be communicated by a note. Most of what I love about music starts in the thinking about it and what is being brought to life in doing it. Playing low brass through all of high school left me with many “uninteresting” parts. I tended to practice my parts thinking about what a bass note gave rise to in an entire ensemble when executed perfectly and to begin thinking not of my own performance as a measure but the composition of all the parts together. I thought this way because of how my dad encouraged me to practice and what skills to focus on when I was looking at what would be considered a boring part. I will miss him and I grieve the things that I will not be able to share with him about myself and the observations I’ve had, but it’s enough to be grateful for what I did receive from him.
I’ve been out of ABQ all week in the PNW and will likely be up here for more several weeks. Grateful for my friends and family’s support. Love you all.
