We stand in silence beneath the weight of names history once tried to erase.
We read. We grieve. We sigh.
And somehow, in the middle of that grief, we smile softly at the reality that we are able to walk these grounds freely — because so many could not.
‘Jack Turner was lynched in Butler, Alabama, in 1882 for organizing black voters in Choctaw County.’
A single plaque with many names. Dates that seemed endless. Reasons that seemed foolish, cruel, and inhumane. Lives taken for existing, organizing, speaking, resisting, surviving.
Yet every name carried a life. A family. A dream. A future.
As we walk through the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, we ground ourselves in what we do and why we are here. The work is deeper than programs, meetings, or titles. It is rooted in memory, dignity, accountability, and love for our people.
To every soul mentioned and unmentioned — we honor you.
We thank you.
We carry you with us.
Because of you, we are able to stand here today with more freedom than yesterday. And we do not take that lightly.
