We're thrilled to announce Obsolete Music by the composer Juri Seo. It is an intricate, driving, and surprising set of 6 compositions that reimagine traditional classical music ideals with Seo’s fascination with modernist musical developments. Obsolete Music is brilliantly executed by the energetic chamber sextet, Latitude 49, who is known for blending the finesse of a classical ensemble with the drive and precision of a finely tuned rock band. Obsolete Music comes out on June 13th, 2025.
Throughout the tracks on Obsolete Music, Seo juxtaposes traditional musical forms with her lush harmonic language, exciting rhythmic ideas, expanded timbral palette, and unorthodox musical structures. Seo imbues humor, warmth, and emotional depth into her pieces while reflecting on past and present, cycles, and the nature of obsolescence. The opening track, "Ostinato," serves as the first single and preview of what's to come.

I dedicated a good portion of 2022 to this project and am happy how it all came together. I couldn’t have done this without Jinjoo, who not only premiered it so beautifully but also did the lion’s share of work producing the show and bringing people together.
This excerpt is from the first movement (of five) called “Jack-in-the-Box.” It’s violent and hilarious, and the performance is perfect! 👍

“I love such moments, when conflicts dissolve in one giant musical stockpot,” writes composer Juri Seo of her 2015 jazz-inspired trio #three. The piece was shaped by hearing her husband’s rock drumming through the floorboards while she worked.
Here, pianist Gilles Vonsattel, percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum, and bassist Brendan Kane perform #three in the Rose Studio in 2021.

Juri Seo’s “July Mountain” brings vivid colour and fast-shifting contrasts to Trio Seoul’s upcoming Halifax program. Seo, a South Korean-born American composer, writes music shaped by an expanded palette of sound, bold structure, and a deep connection to tonality and classical form. In “July Mountain,” the three movements, “Metasequoia,” “Golden Bells,” and “Sonamu,” draw inspiration from the Korean landscape and unfold as a cinematic and finely detailed sound world.
Performed by violinist Jinjoo Cho, cellist Brannon Cho, and pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, Trio Seoul also performs Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 39 in G Major, “Gypsy,” Franz Liszt’s “Tristia,” and Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Trio.” A remarkable ensemble and an immersive program of expressive works. We have had an AMAZING 2025, thank you! - and one of the greatest joys of this year has been celebrating our 25th anniversary with videos from our new album. We’re ending the year with a truly awesome piece of music - Juri Seo’s vv. When @composerjuri joined the faculty at @princeton the same year as Sō, we started talking to her about writing a new piece for us. The result - vv - is a virtuosic work for four players at two vibraphones and is the closest thing we have to a string quartet in terms of its interwoven melodic lines. vv has quickly become standard repertoire in the percussion world!
