The recently concluded 2026 so called Forward Africa summit, referred to by many as France-Africa summit in Nairobi, Kenya was a singularly unedifying fiasco. French President Emmanuel Macron, who has previously chided Africans as ingrates beset with ‘civilisational problems’, could not restrain himself from hectoring his audience for its ‘total lack of respect’ even as he attempted to rebrand himself as a ‘true pan-Africanist’. At the same time, his craven Kenyan counterpart William Ruto was ordering armed thugs to brutalise and violently arrest the real pan-Africanists gathered outside.
Surprising no one, Macron found time to condemn China for the allegedly ‘predatory logic’ of its infrastructural investments across the continent. Without a hint of irony, he accused the Asian power of extracting Africa’s raw materials and ‘doing the processing at home’. At no point did he betray a hint of self-awareness that Niger’s stolen uranium powered a third of his own country’s electrical grid, until its people united under their popular military government to expel French forces unceremoniously.
