🚨 THIS SATURDAY!! 🚨 All are invited to march with me and my @comixaction friends to commemorate Nakba Day. We will be marching for Palestinian liberation, an end to the Israel’s ongoing genocide and occupation and the right of return for all Palestinians. This is a @nycpym organized protest in Brooklyn. I created this artwork for the #ComicsForLiam initiative, powered by @comixaction ! Comic artists have been challenged with drawing happy, wholesome artwork for Liam Conejo Ramos, the five-year-old asylum seeker who was held in an ICE detention facility with his father for two weeks before a federal judge ordered his release. The art initiative’s goal is two-fold: 1) To send some love and happiness to uplift Liam after the trauma of ICE detention, and 2) Raise funds and bring awareness to other children/families in detention that need our help. This particular artwork was inspired by the “Conejo” in Liam’s surname and on his hat, as the word in Spanish means “rabbit.” I also drew inspiration from my own two boys; there are few things that give them as much joy during the winter as taking their sled to the hill down the block and careening over the little speed bumps they build in the snow. As a parent, I can’t describe how angry I was seeing this child and his father treated with such inhumanity, but it pales in comparison to how furious I am knowing there are HUNDREDS of children still suffering in detention. The DHS continues to pursue deportation proceedings for this family. I’m grateful for a way my art can help bring attention to kids like Liam who deserve protection, not incarceration. When I saw pictures of Liam Ramos with his Spidey backpack and bunny hat, I felt an overwhelming responsibility as someone who works in superhero comics.
