This coming May, we and the PSU Film Studies program will be hosting a free, family-friendly festival to celebrate the program, our students, and our amazing local creators here in Portland! This year's Comics Confluence Festival will take place on May16th from 1 to 7pm and it completely free for the public to attend!

Comics Confluence Panelist Announcement - Emilie Kelly!
Emilie Kelly will be part of the Breaking into Comics: Pathways to Success panel from 2:10 - 3:30 p.m. on May 16th in LH331.
Emilie Kelly is a writer, illustrator, and filmmaker currently based in Portland, OR. Her background in anthropology and media theory influences her work by encouraging her to explore mixed-media, audience perspective, and the power of the story. Her current project is Things Are Afoot! (2024-present), a mystery/horror graphic novel about the ‘Most Isolated Town in America’. Her feature-length student documentary, The Grand Trans-American Cornhole Quest (2022), explores what it means to be an American, and received an honorable mention at the Student Independent World Film Festival (SWIFF).

The Comics Confluence Festival will be holding a raffle tomorrow, May 16th, from 1:00 - 7:00 p.m. Raffle tickets will cost $5 each with all proceeds going towards the Comics Studies program. Cash and Venmo payments will be accepted. Prizes will include signed comics and merch that have been kindly donated by our panelists and other guests such as Brian Michael Bendis!
Winners will be selected and emailed next week.

Comics Confluence Festival Panelist Announcement - Ren Strapp!
Ren Strapp will be a panelist on the Breaking Into Comics: Pathways to Success panel from 2:10-3:30 p.m. on May 16th in LH331.
Ren Strapp is a comic artist and gender nonconforming lesbian werewolf. She grew up in the ancestral territories of the Susquehannock, Shawnee and Monacans and now lives on unceded Chinook land at the confluence of the Wimahl and Willamette rivers known as Portland, OR. Ren started her comics career in zines and web comics and will be a zinester until she dies. Her work is inspired by risograph printing and American traditional tattooing. Strapp’s work includes “The Shepard’s Sword” and “How Could You.”

Diana Schutz will be moderating the Comics After College: Advice from Alums panel from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on May 16th in LH331. She will be joined by three Comics Studies alums who are now editors at Dark Horse!
Diana Schutz is an award-winning comic editor who edited some of Will Eisner’s work while at Dark Horse Comics. She has also edited iconic series such as “Sin City,” “Usagi Yojimbo,” and “American Splendor.” Schutz was the first woman to be inducted into the Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2023.

Liz Yerby will be hosting the Making Zines workshop from 3:45 - 5:15 p.m. on May 16th in LH331.
Liz Yerby is a cartoonist based out of Portland, Oregon. They make comics, and are self-published as well as contribute to anthologies. They have been a key organizer for the Portland Zine Symposium since 2017, and regularly do workshops on art-making with adults and youth.

Kelly Sue DeConnick will be at our Free Signing/Meet & Greet table from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. on May 16th in LH339. She will also be joined by @brianmbendis .
Kelly Sue Deconnick is a comic, stage, and TV writer. She is well-known in the mainstream market as the reinventor of Captain Marvel and for reimagining Wonder Woman’s origin in “Wonder Woman Historia” (Eisner Award winner). DeConnick is also known in the independent scene with her comics “Bitch Planet” and “Pretty Deadly” (both Eisner-nominated). She currently develops television with her husband and partner, Matt Fraction, as Milkfed Criminal Masterminds. DeConnick co-founded and co-owns GOOD TROUBLE PRODUCTIONS with Andrew Aydin, Valentine De Landro, Matt Fraction, and Vaughn Shinall.
