In 1996, #TheLastAngelofHistory heralded the dawning of the new digital age. Today at #NoDirectFlightLDN along with a screening, audiences are invited to investigate how the internet is used as an instrument for languages to develop across a global filmmaking community. ✨ Is there a lineage of diaspora aesthetics? Is memetic culture affecting production, and is the internet now a much-needed archive for black filmmakers?  At @britishfilminstitute today, there will be a live-link to speakers and theorists around the world to talk, debate, share and provocate. Including the incredible @blackstarfest . Link bio #NoDirectFlightLDN #AfricaLDN #EastAfricaArts

Look out for this at @CineRedis ! The idiosyncratic work of Nigerien filmmaker Moustapha Alassane (1942–2015). A pioneer of populist cinema in newly independent Niger in the '60s - '70s, Alassane parodied colonialist attitudes toward Black Africans, corrupt despotism of local officials, & shallow materialism of the country's youth in a series of animated, fictional, & ethnographic films.. With intro by the superb @iashent & Ehsan Khoshbakht Ticket in link in bio #CineRedis #CineRedis19

Originally intended as a short film, 7 and 1/2 yrs in the making, what emerges in #HoopDreams is a candid exploration of our society’s tendency to exploit young athletes by making promises of fame & fortune that rarely come to pass. Twenty five years after its premiere at the 1994 @sundanceorg Film Festival, this revelatory film continues to inspire, and is widely considered one of the great works of American non-fiction cinema. Don't miss the UK premiere at @cineredis this weekend. ✨ Recent digital restoration c/o @sundanceorg Institute, @uclaftvarchive , @theacademy Film Archive and @kartemquin Films. Digitally remastered at Modern VideoFilm with sound restoration by Audio Mechanics, this version allows you to see the film as conceived by its filmmakers. After its premiere at Cinema Rediscovered, Hoop Dreams opens in UK cinemas 25 October c/o Violet Pictures.

Last few days to catch the incredible @amazinggracemov shot over two nights in January 1972 at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. It shows a then 30-year-old @arethasings perform a gospel concert. The resulting album, Amazing Grace, sold more than 2m copies in the US and remains the highest selling live gospel album of all time, as well as one of Franklin’s bestselling albums. Almost 50 years after technical issues scuppered its original release, Sydney Pollack’s concert film finally makes it to the big screen, and is already being hailed as one of the finest music documentaries ever made. This extraordinary document of a truly remarkable figure in American music lets you witness Aretha Franklin as you've never seen her before. Nothing short of a revelation, soaring from one chill-inducing moment to another, this soul shaking, transcendent film captures the energy of Aretha’s performance in a way that is nothing short of electrifying.
