We recently had the honor of hosting a group of Japanese foster youth visiting the U.S. for the first time with
@ifca_japan . They traveled to Portland to connect with local foster youth, share experiences, and shine a light on the importance of knowing their rights, an area where many young people in the foster system often feel left in the dark.
Together, we created a collaborative mobile mural with talented artist Jeremy Nichols
@plasticbirdie , spent the day discussing youth rights and empowerment, made Japanese etegami, and explored the Japanese Gardens.
The art piece entitled, “The Right to Know” was first imagined through a virtual brainstorming session on zoom between the youth in Japan and the artist. They described feeling lost at sea but guided by the moon’s light, a reflection of their resilience and hope. When the group arrived in Portland, we painted the piece together at the
@artworkspdx gallery alongside youth involved with
@pearmentor , creating a meaningful day of connection, laughter, and shared understanding.
The completed mural will be exhibited in Seattle, Oakland, and Tokyo, continuing the mission of uplifting youth voices, fostering cross-cultural connection, and advocating for youth rights on a global stage.
Thanks to
@regionalarts for making projects like these possible.
