LA BECQUE PORTRAITS - Colin Self
Learn more about the American artist, composer and puppeteer Colin (@colinself )’s three-month residency as part of our Principal Residency Program with this new video in our series of portraits of La Becque residents.
While at La Becque, Colin worked on a series of videos with Bobbi Salvör Menuez (@hi_its_bobbi ), relating to their forthcoming record, ‘respite ∞ levity for the nameless ghost in crisis’, which comes out on February 21, 2025 on RVNG Intl. (@rvngintl ). Colin also created some new ceramics and puppets, and developed a performance called ‘Voice for a Shadow’, which they presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (@centrepompidou ) last October and at La Becque during the last session of our Open Studios in November 2024.

This past month, Colin Self took residence in the Pioneer Works Recording Studio as our April–May Music Resident.
An artist, composer, and puppeteer based between Brooklyn and Berlin, Self creates music, performances, and new systems for interfacing with the human spirit on a spectrum between the living and deceased.
This past Sunday, Self hosted an XOIR session—Self's group singing collective—in the garden as they continue work on a new choral LP which utilizes a specialized multi-channel wireless roving speaker array developed in collaboration with their cousin @peterjbowling .
Follow @colinself on Instagram, and visit our link in bio to learn more about Colin's work.

I feel so immensely fortunate to have been graced with Agosto’s light and spirit. My relationship with Agosto began only after pandemic lockdown, but grounded me in a sense of belonging and reunited me with an understanding of my role as an artist. An anchor of meaningfulness, she helped guide me to a bridge of lineages, and opened the responsibility of stewardship; to carry forward the spirit of collective celebration, of rage and courage and justice, of glamor and ridiculousness. Above all else, I was profoundly moved by Agosto’s kindness— and his love and reverence for community members who had passed away. These shrines and altars, filled with artists, performers, activists, and street queens alike became a crucial example of how I want to be a part of what he called “the ensemble of life”. Celebrating Agosto’s spirit and legacy is also a celebration of communities, of the margins, the underground and the unknown, unnamed angels who graced the stages and streets across generations.
This diva queen became my compass, guiding me back to myself, to remember why I make art and music and performance. It is the greatest honor that Agosto let his beautiful shrines be the album art for my record, and that I had the pleasure of performing together last year.
Agosto’s lightness, in generosity and spirit, taught me how to live in reverence and celebration of those who have passed away. & with Agosto’s passing I am continuing to learn from him about what that lightness is. My heart is with all of those who loved Agosto, who knew him across time.
There is a huge party unfolding in the spirit world as I write this, as Agosto joins all his friends, all the other ancestors. & Agosto has left me with a lifetime of names to spend time with. Thank you Agosto for blessing my life with your presence, and for what you’ve taught me. I will miss you very much 🌸
