Our first year since launching the Coldwells Build Passivhaus range, and what a year it’s been.  We travelled across Scotland, took part in our first trade shows, visited plots and had countless conversations. All in service of one goal: helping people understand what building a certified Passivhaus truly means for their health, comfort and energy bills. We moved into our new HQ & workshop, expanded the Passivhaus range with fresh designs, and continued putting our joiners and builders through Passivhaus tradesperson training. We welcomed new faces into the business who share our commitment to raising the bar and building better. We picked up a commendation at the @federationofmasterbuilders Awards and saw our latest projects featured in our favourite publications. We took a number of Passivhaus homes through planning permission and are poised to bring those to life in 2026. This year has been a big one. Full, challenging, exciting and memorable. Built in 1888, The Old Central School in Gartly, Aberdeenshire has had more than one life. It served the local community until 1962, before later being used to house cattle, earning the nickname “The Coo School”. We’re now beginning its next chapter, converting it into a modern family home. The blend of pink sandstone and dark rock gives it a distinct character — and we’re not the only ones who think so. Lee’s family had treasured their 150-year-old Aberdeenshire schoolhouse since her parents bought it in 1981. When it passed to Lee and her husband Gerry, they wanted to give it a new lease of life. The cottage was draughty and too cold to live in for half the year. This traditional Aberdeenshire steading is being converted into a modern family home, and it’s keeping its character in the process. An original wall with three wide arches had begun to lean, so it was taken down and rebuilt using the existing granite. Each arch has been reconstructed, with the stone shaped around a timber former to recreate the curves and original proportions. The master bedroom at our Tullynessle project in Aberdeenshire. Sliding doors open onto a private balcony, with views stretching out over the countryside. The home is built in granite and slate, sitting naturally within the local landscape. If you’re in rural Scotland and not on the gas grid, the past month has probably stung. Heating oil prices have more than doubled. And while that’s a real pressure, it also points to something bigger. The way our homes are designed and built matters a lot. The Arbor House is a contemporary home in the West End of Aberdeen, built on a salvaged stone wall from a former coach house on the same site. The timber-clad first floor cantilevers over the original structure, with full-height glazing bringing light into the home.
