It's Record Store Day 2026 and Matt has helped to bring you all a gem with Shamans in Space on Liquid Sound Design exclusive vinyl pressing. Part future sound, part ancient tradition the release asks the question: Can sound take us to outer space? For the Guarani & Kaiowá Indigenous communities in Brazil, sound is understood as a form of Mba’ekuaa - a powerful technology to dialogue with spirit entities and restore balance with nature. Visit your local record store before the day is over!

@atgrnl launches DJ Touch 1 - a DIY Controller This looks really interesting. Algoriddim DJ pro is Matt’s dj weapon of choice esp. When paired with a controller, e.g. reloop buddy but cheap touch screen will work too. -- Based on the ESP32 CYD microcontroller, expand the functionality of traditional deck controllers with stem manipulation, remote stop/start+X-fader or expanded hotcues.

Feeling the A-V scene needed an umbrella term, ‘Audio-Visualism was offered’, suggesting it is the relationships between a works audio and visual streams that define how A-V it is. This has led to a new book called ‘Audio-Visualism’ with contributions from many in the community. I and Nilly Brook have written chapter 3; it’s largely based on my and Coldcut’s journey through music and A-V. Book will be out later this year, more info soon.

#throwbackthursday Was invited to play at excellent Reykjavik extreme chill festival, also played after mix master Morris in promoter pan’s wonderful Shop space Odyssey, did a live Jamm Pro set to an appreciative audience. Experimented with pointing the iPad towards the audience by reversing the stand so people can see what my fingers are doing, think this worked well.

It’s been 30 years since the release of @coldcutofficial “Journeys by DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness” mix! Considered one of the most influential mixes of all time, it elevated and redefined the format to nothing less than an art form. Video remix by Matt Black using the section with Junior Reed’s ‘One Blood’ and ’Street Beats Vol 2’ by The Truper (aka Photek). Before its release, the mix album had mainly been a straightforward, linear affair, with records (usually house and techno) laid down one after the other. The Guardian observed that its release was now “the standard by which all DJ mix albums are judged,”. It was also named the best compilation ever by Jockey Slut and put in all time lists by the likes of DJ, Q, Spin and Mojo. Coldcut pushed the boundaries of what a DJ mix could be by incorporating changes in tempo, spoken word samples, scratching and layering. The intricate production, which involved studio editing (using ADAT and early computer software), made the mix feel more like a artist album than a DJ set. It incorporated everything from Jungle, Techno, Hip-Hop, Downtempo Funk, House to Dub whilst using diverse samples from other sources including the Doctor Who theme and punk musician Jello Biafra. Jon More of Coldcut humbly remarked that it’s the sound of “a drunken man’s stagger home.” The tagline 70 Minutes of Madness, is a reference to Coldcut’s 1987 genre-fusing remix of Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid in Full”, which itself was subtitled “Seven Minutes of Madness” and had helped reinvent the remix. Let’s also not forget the vital contributions DJ Food and PC also made to the mix and the influence of the Solid Steel club nights where routines were honed and fed into the release. It’s safe to say it has left a lasting impact on electronic and dance music culture.
