MATCHA MET Coco Olakunle 🍵
In aanloop naar de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen interview ik een aantal voor mij iconische Amsterdammers over hun dromen voor de stad.
Mijn motivatie om de raad in te gaan is niet persoonlijk gewin. In deze bizarre tijden wil ik juist een stevig tegengeluid laten horen en me inzetten voor een betere toekomst voor ons allemaal.
Een toekomst die niet alleen in beleid wordt bedacht, maar die voortkomt uit de dromen van Amsterdammers zelf.
Want we moeten ons thuis kunnen voelen in deze stad, een stad die historisch altijd een plek is geweest waar iedereen mag zijn en waar iedereen zichzelf kan zijn.
Misschien zien mensen mij als havermelkelite, maar zelf zie ik me toch eerder als een ‘soja socialist’. En ja, ik trakteer mezelf af en toe op een matcha of koffie bij @cafe.susy of @yusu.coffee twee van mijn favoriete plekken in mijn eigen Amsterdam Oost.
Deze keer schuift @cocoolakunle aan, fotograaf.
We praten over wat Amsterdam zo bijzonder maakt: een stad waar je op één dag tien afspraken kunt hebben en overal met de fiets naartoe kunt. Maar ook over hoe ingewikkeld het kan zijn om hier een huis te vinden. Coco heeft zelf twee jaar lang van plek naar plek geleefd voordat ze een eigen woning kon vinden.
Voor haar gaat het uiteindelijk om iets heel basaals: dat je in de stad waar je familie woont ook daadwerkelijk kunt wonen en leven.
En we praten over de stad door de ogen van kinderen. Over wat we kunnen doen zodat ook zij Amsterdam volledig kunnen gebruiken en ervan kunnen genieten en over hoe belangrijk het is dat natuur dichtbij blijft.
Want een stad moet niet alleen werken voor vandaag, maar ook voor de generaties die erna komen.
Want de stad is van ons allemaal.

On Sunday, May 25, we invite you to a special edition of the Photography Book Club, initiated by Coco Olakunle, and hosted in collaboration with MINO and Mori. This gathering offers a relaxed Sunday afternoon dedicated to exploring a thoughtfully selected array of photography books that inspire and provoke dialogue.
The Photography Book Club is more than browsing beautiful pages, it creates space for slow looking, critical reflection, and communal exchange. Through a curated selection of books we explore identity, representation, memory, and visual culture, themes that resonate deeply with the practices of Coco, MINO and Mori.📚
Expect a cozy, open atmosphere where we reflect, listen, and share. You don’t need to be an expert or own any photobooks to join. Just bring your curiosity and openness.
