Save the date for our virtual showcase of CJD Fellows work on Jan 11 from 12-1 ET in partnership with @bplmaps ✅ What does the landscape of injustice look like across the United States, and what form would more equitable stewardship of our shared resources have amidst a changing climate? Together, the projects of the seven fellows of the Climate Justice Design Fellowship begin to illustrate these trends and point to actions. This interactive exhibition will explore stories of climate displacement, impacts of hazardous waste contamination, opportunities to build adaptive infrastructure, visions for urban futures, and other aspects of environmental justice from around the country. The CJDF fellows are leaders in civil society and government institutions in Portland, OR; New Orleans, LA; Philadelphia, PA; Los Angeles, CA; Ann Arbor, MI; Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; and Harlem, NY. They have powerful insight into the most important issues facing these diverse locales. Supported by scholars and engineers from the Harvard University Institute for Quantitative Social Science, Graduate School of Design, and Salata Institute, their work uses the tools of data, design, and web technology to analyze patterns, visualize effects, and share individual stories of historical decisions, present day injustice, and alternative futures in a changing climate. Join us next Tuesday at 4PM for the last talk of our semester! Abby Spinak studies energy history, with a particular interest in the politics of utility ownership and the role of infrastructure in disseminating economic ideas. Her current research ties the history of electrification in the rural United States to the evolution of twentieth-century American capitalism and alternative economic visions. She is currently completing a book, Democracy Electric: Energy and Economic Citizenship in an Urbanizing America, which explores how a cooperative business model came to be preferred for federal electrification policy in the 1930s as a third option in a fierce debate about public versus private power; how a vast network of these community-owned and democratically-managed utilities arose across the country, quickly and dramatically altering the American landscape; and how urbanizing communities variously interpreted the political opportunities of community ownership at different moments over the past eighty years. Abby received her PhD in Urban Studies and Planning at MIT (2014). She has been a Charles Warren Center Fellow in the History of American Capitalism at Harvard University (2015-2016) and recently held an Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellowship in the Energy Humanities at Rice University (2016-2017).

Join us next Tuesday for our weekly seminar series! DEVELOPING TOOLS FOR TREE EQUITY Tuesday November 22, 2022 . 4-5PM est. Weekly Seminar Series with Climate Justice Design Fellowship Zoom link in bio 💫 Mushtaaq Ali (she/her/hers) works with American Forests’ Resilient Forests program on conservation projects regarding large landscape reforestation as well as forest soil carbon. In addition, on the Tree Equity Score team, she works to make access to trees more equitable across urban spaces using data and GIS. Before joining American Forests in 2021, Ali researched the impacts of fire in savanna ecosystems using remote sensing data. She has a degree in integrative biology from Harvard University and is part of the 2019 cohort of the UCSC Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program.

We are lucky to have Catherine De Almeida join us tomorrow for our seminar series! Trained as a landscape architect and building architect, @landscape_lifecycles Catherine’s research examines the materiality and performance of waste landscapes through exploratory methods in design research and practice. Her work has ranged in scale from large bio-cultural and sacred indigenous landscapes, to site design and architectural work, to furniture design and materials research. Through her design work, research, teaching and engagement, she explores ways of creating multiplicity within a single entity, space, building or site to form greater efficiencies and performative capabilities in design. #landscapearchitecture #wastesystems #harvard #harvardgsd #uw #collegeofbuiltenvironments #fellowship #lecture

We are excited to have José joining us tomorrow to give a talk for our CJDF seminar series! @atomenendez He will be speaking about 1:1 design for social impacts. José R. Menéndez is a graphic designer and educator, with a background in marine science communication and landscape architecture. His multi-disciplinary practice, research, and teaching are intertwined as he investigates topics such as community engagement through health communication and social justice; expanding the canons of graphic design by highlighting Latin American and Caribbean practices; and designing spatial justice and ecological narratives in the landscape. José is an Assistant Professor in Graphic Design and Architecture at the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University. He is a founding partner at Counterform, a Design and Print Studio in Providence, RI, where his work explores the design practice as a platform for multilingual communication, dissemination, access, visibility, equity, and justice at multiple scales.
