Back at this second base of mine in West Cork for a few days away from the humdrum; this time with Mum and my daughter for their first time! Delighted to have them here and to share a place that has very much shaped my life in every great way over my last 8 visits annually.
It’s strange this time to be here, both because it’s February and not the autumn and also because for once I am not the one in charge, though I feel I should be doing stuff.
I have such a deep connection physically with this place and also the mightily authentic couple and wider family behind it. In spite of coming so many years now, it still pops my brain that I get to do this annually and take over someone else’s baby for two or three weeks. So many significant changes in layout and purpose happening here at the moment for the betterment of an already Tripadvisor top-rated experiential destination. Vision cannot be contained and that is self-evident at Top of the Rock. This ‘thin place’ is indeed unique and a massive yet quiet addition to the national wellbeing.
John McCarthy, February surf check. He’s somehow always been in the right place at the right time, an innate talent that only the most capable surfers have. From memory his nose was a bit ❄️

I had an incredible time in the beautiful Lahinch out Whest with the amazing pro surfer John Mc.
John has an amazing testimony getting saved over 20 years ago. Honestly just being in his company was so inspiring and listening to him talk about his faith and his love for the Lord was powerful 🔥
I was just in awe…being out on the surface of the deep, surrounded by God’s creation and Free. How blessed we truly are 🌊
All glory to You Lord for these moments of joy, moments of fellowship and moments of adventure. Thank You for the beauty of Your creation and for the people You have placed in my path like John whose passion for surfing and love for You shine so brightly.
