Behind the scenes of cosy stop motion for @Burberry This was a very intensive project, because there were many sets & objects to make and felting takes a long time! It took weeks to make everything, do testing, make changes, animate and edit it. The objects were made by felting wool, and the sets were made with felt sheeting. I used velcro on the felt sheeting to give it extra fluffiness. There is wire in the felt objects in order hold their shape. My wife also worked hard! She had to hold her hand in the shot for hours while I animated steam & fire. In the first 2 scenes, the left hand and right hand were animated separately, because the tripod was in the way. We also did multiple takes on each scene to get the best version. Luckily the “steam strands” were so light that they stood up by themselves or against the wall, so I didn’t need to use a rig to hold it. I used little LED bulbs to light up the gas flame, fire and lamp. A cosy felt animation for @burberry I had the pleasure of making another stop motion animation for Burberry. They wanted a warm snug homey fuzzy animation made for their TikTok profile, so I created this little world from wool and felt sheeting. It features some of the check patterns and products from their new collection. A big thank you to my wife for “lending a hand”( for hours & hours!) Her fingers are much prettier than my dry cracked fingers, and it allowed me to focus on animating all the elements. It was part of my stop motion trash challenge from a few months ago. It was a reminder of how society over-consumes, over-packages, and under-reuses. I cut out two identical dolphins from a polystyrene plate, and then anied one dolphin diving into the water (animated forwards) and one dolphin coming out of water (animated backwards). I made the cut when the dolphin is moving fast, so that it is not noticeable. The water is made from hair gel.The fast erratic water movement also helps hide the cut. The dolphin was held in place with a winder rig. The wire is masked out when editing. A mouse comes to life! 🐭🧀 I taught an online class/workshop for @colossal two months ago. It was two hour class which is a short time to create a stop motion animation! It was aimed at beginners so I used Stop Motion Studio app on a phone, and used common household objects for the class.
 I decided to animate this cute little story in the class, while I talked about Animation principles and tips and tricks for making stopmo. It was my first live teaching session, so I was relieved that it went well.

My Top 6 videos of the Trash Stop Motion Animation Challenge! Thank you so much to everybody that made videos for the challenge. I know stop motion is a lot of work (planning, building sets, setting up, animating, adding sound effects). You all had such different and creative ideas. It was very difficult to choose my favorites! Here are my Top 6 favorite videos: - @dashamatesha : A strange orange world filled with interesting creatures, and a surprise ending! I love all the creatures and especially their blinking. - @leelo.illustrations : A cool secret agent cat. I love that this was made with Mcdonalds boxes, because the fast food industry generates a ton of waste! I also love how energetic and animated it is for a paper puppet! - @qalexanderk : A singing bird made from beer cans and other trash. Very funny and I love how you can see that the birds feathers are cut from a can and old paper. It also loops really well! - @amirhosein.ebi : A scary sea monster! So funny and surprising! Love the movement of that sinking plastic lid! I also love the idea of a plastic bag monster because plastic bag pollution does kill a lot of sea animals. - @bodraw_ : Garbage Pinball machine! Such a creative idea! I love the clean layout with different shapes, and how you can recognise these common trash items. Great work for one of her first stop motion videos. - @omarimation : Toilet Roll Skateboarder. If you took a still frame from this, then you never know what it is, but the motion makes it come alive! Recycle Trash into Animation ♻️ 
This was made as part of my #stopmotrash challenge. Make a stop motion animation using garbage. Only a few days left! Post your trash videos on or before the 19 March.

Polystyrene can be recycled if countries have a right machinery, but it is made of 95% air, so when it is melted down then you only get a very small amount of usable material. This means that it not profitable to be collected and processed and therefore it is rarely recycled in most countries. 😔 

And because it is so light and airy, the wind often blows it from landfills and a lot of it ends up in the sea! 😫 Companies have to start using more eco-friendly materials! Consumers have to start choosing more eco-friendly packaging. Alternative packaging will be more expensive, but we have to do it to save our planet! 🌍!

The water in this animation is made with hair gel. I tested using old plastic bags as water, but I wasn’t happy with the results. Making Affordable Stop Motion Animation.

Stop Motion can be very cheap or very expensive depending on what tools you use. Having lots of high tech equipment (SLR camera, rigs, armatures, dragonframe, tripods, sliders, lighting…) can give you more control and make your stop motion more professional, but if you are creative then you can make some amazing videos without spending much money. Tips for making Stop Motion on a budget: - Look around your house for materials/objects/toys and think of ideas that you can make with those things (Eg. old books, matches, food, trash, cutlery, foil, toys, clothing…). - Camera: Use your smartphone with an app - Stop Motion phone apps often have a free version or the paid version is $10. - Hold your camera still with: books / A mug / sticky tack / a shelf (top down shot)/ make a phone holder with wood / a tripod (if you already have one). - Block out natural light from windows with big cardboard boxes. - Make a rig (to hold items in air) with a weight (tinned food, coins) and aluminium wire. - Use a white board to reflect light, and brighten up your scene. - Make puppets with an aluminium wire skeleton, so they can hold their pose. There is one thing that you will have to spend a lot on! TIME. Good stop motion takes time to make a good plan, time to test or practice, and time to animate each movement for a smooth animation! 👾A very short 8bit game! 😂 You can see I’ve been collecting trash for a while! 🤪😂 Our guinea pigs love their lettuce so we get a lot of polystyrene bases! We try to buy food with less packaging, but unfortunately lettuce doesn’t last very long without packaging. I made this animation as part of my #stopmotrash challenge. Recycle your garbage into stop motion animation! There are plenty of problems with this! - I used natural lighting on a cloudy day, which caused light flicker. - I didn’t have a good “game” plan video starts well, but not much happens. - I didn’t have a lot of time so it ends too soon. But the important thing is that I made something! I encourage you to create more than you consume. Learn a skill! Make art! Challenge yourself! It will take time. It will never be perfect. Everything is not okay! We live in this magical reality where you simply put your garbage in front of your house, and the magic truck takes it far away to a place where it magically disappears! We like to believe that machines are doing recycling magic on it and turning it into new shiny products. But the reality is not very magical! This was made as part of my #stopmotrash challenge. “Recycling” Trash in Animation. This stop motion was made with polystyrene packaging from Lettuce. I took a lighter and heated the polystyrene carefully in order to melt the fingers into a new position. I challenge you to create a stop motion animation out of trash or garbage! You can make something arty, make a character, make a story, make an effect. Anything! Just make it creative! It doesn’t need to be 100% trash. You can use other materials, objects or puppets in the video, as long as trash plays a main role. Anybody can enter (Professionals or beginners). There is no prize, but I will choose the 6 most creative stop motion videos and repost them on my account, to help give you some exposure. - You cannot use an old video. You need to create a new video for the challenge. - Upload it to Instagram on or before the 19 March 2023 - Use the hashtag #stopmotrash And please tag me in the video. - Your video can be any length, but less than 1 minute is best. - The best ratio size for Instagram reels is vertical 1080x1920 (but any size video will be accepted) - The video must be made frame by frame with stop motion, but you can add a few small digital effects. 18 March is Global Recycling Day, so keep that in mind if you want to make an eco-friendly video.
