A world tour in a vase. Walking through the streets of Beirut, I was amazed. I kept calling out to him, “Look at this one!” Here, a jacaranda from South America; there, a grevillea from Australia. The coastal Mediterranean climate is a dream for any plant lover. Here, everything seems possible to grow. The world on the streets, the city as a garden, and us, the gardeners.

May is for wildflowers. Last year, we (florists) were all amazed by the photos of irises from Syria and Turkey captured by @oron_peri . Today, here in Lebanon, I am the lucky one to find them along the road to Tannourine and Chouf. Wildflowers are so precious, so fragile, they bloom, they fade, and then they are gone till next year. Yet despite the war, Lebanon is in bloom. There is a fierce lust for life in the air. Between the rocks, between the ruins, life keeps thriving and maybe that is what hope looks like, Lebanon, no matter what, still in bloom.

Last week, a brand asked me for arrangements. I suggested irises, she preferred anemones. I told her they were no longer in season. How beautiful it is to appreciate the flowers of now, before they disappear for another year. We’ve become used to having everything, all the time, and we call that luxury. I don’t agree. The true luxury is knowing how to wait, waiting for the right moment, listening to what the garden has to say because flowers are the art of now.
