An echinoderm with an incredible biology, crown-of-thorns are huge starfish that can grow up to half a meter in diameter. They’ve got 17 odd arms, are very, very spiky (hence the name) - and they eat coral.
These psychedelic looking starfish are wreaking havoc on the great barrier reef as their population booms - which is happening as a result of fertilizers and pesticides running off from farms in eastern Australia.
Over on the Clean Waves journal we're joining the dots between industrial agriculture and crown-of-thorns and learning what scientists are doing to slow their population growth to try and protect the reef 👉️ cleanwaves.com/journal
Checking in on the Great Barrier Reef with @CleanWaves
🪸🪸🪸
In Australia, Clean Waves focuses on protecting one of the world’s most vital (and iconic) ecosystems: the Great Barrier Reef. After over 30 years living on Lizard Island, coral reef scientist Dr Anne Hoggett of the Lizard Island Research Station is filling us in on what she knows about the the future prospects of the reef - and walking us through what she's working on still finding out.
That’s over on the Clean Waves journal 👉️ cleanwaves.com
While it’s one of the most beautiful islands in Australia, Lizard Island is also a hotspot for plastic pollution, and it’s all due to its location. Sitting directly in the path of Southern Equatorial Current, plastic is transported across the entire Pacific Ocean polluting the reefs and mangroves of the island.

"I never realized how much plastic pollution was washed up or floating there until we did my first beach cleanup. It was informative and changed my perception of what's really going on. This to me is the heart and soul of Parley and their community who share the mission to save the oceans and marine life around the world. I am humbled to be part of their mission."
Help us continue to do the work. Every pair of @CleanWaves frames sold funds more cleanups in the Maldives and beyond.

“The passion I have for the oceans in every way, from surfing to diving, and then the work I do with my mom with Parley, really comes out of love for the ocean and the environment as I’ve seen everything there is to see in this country.
Not many Maldivians have seen as much of the country as I have, and especially not underwater as most people can’t swim. Still, every time I go out on a boat to help clean up a remote island somewhere, always takes my breath away. Just going out on a boat on a nice day and seeing the islands, it never gets old.
In fact it feels like my first time, every time.”

The Maldives is the jewel of the Indian Ocean, home to some of the most abundant waters anywhere on the planet. A nation that is 99% water is especially threatened by the climate crisis.
Over the last six years our @Parley.tv teams on the ground, in collaboration with local communities, have intercepted 2000 tons of plastic out of the Maldives for recycling. @CleanWaves is transforming this plastic from a threat into symbols of change.

Niq Ali, student, surfer and free-diver has travelled the length and breath of the Maldives.
“I could swim before I could walk—I must have been about eight months old. Growing up in the Maldives, I would always see plastic lying around the beaches, but not to the extent that you see nowadays. In fact, if a beach hasn’t been cleaned recently, you’re always going to see plastic.”

The Maldives is a vast archipelago of 1200 low-lying islands spread across 26 coral atolls. It’s one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and one of the most vulnerable.
Every pair of Clean Waves sunglasses sold funds the removal of 50kg of plastic from the ocean. Despite lockdowns and inter-island travel bans, over the past year Clean Waves and Parley organized cleanups across 13 individual islands, clearing 425,000 square meters of beaches and shorelines. With your help we have removed 3,526kg of debris – of which 1,787kg is plastic – in the past year.
On behalf of the oceans, thanks for supporting our work in the Maldives via Clean Waves.

A nation that is 99% water is especially threatened by the climate crisis. Island nations are the first to bear witness. They’re also the first to act.
Maldivians are leading the way for the resilience and collaboration needed to create a better future. Across the islands, communities are rising up and working together to battle the threats - from unprecedented storms to plastic pollution.
Over the last six years our @Parley.tv teams on the ground, in collaboration with local communities, have intercepted 2000 tons of plastic out of the Maldives for recycling. This is equivalent to 19 million five-liter water bottles, which if had been burnt would have emitted 32.3 million kilos of carbon into the atmosphere.
