The CLC is shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of composer and cellist Cris Derksen. Cris was one of the most important compositional voices working in Canada today, bending and redefining genres while striving to make the world of classical music a better place.
“The ISCM Canadian Section was deeply enriched by its collaborations with Cris Derksen. We are so honoured that her CLC-commissioned work “the bells” represented Canada at the World New Music Days 2023, and that its wonderful performance by her friend Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa is recorded and available for posterity. To refer to Cris in the past tense is a tremendous challenge, and her absence will be sorely felt by both the Canadian Section in the community at large.

The CLC is thrilled to announce the release of our new Model Music Services Agreement, drafted in collaboration with Edwards Creative Law, one of Canada’s leading entertainment law firms. Designed specifically for use in musical contexts, this contract provides a flexible template for composers that are either being contracted for their services, or contracting the services of another party.
On Tuesday, June 2 @ 2PM EDT, CLC General Manager August Murphy-King will be joined by Byron Pascoe, a partner at Edwards Creative Law, to provide an in-depth overview of the contract. (En anglais seulement, une version sous-titrée en français sera disponible rapidement après le webinaire).
Byron Pascoe is an entertainment lawyer and partner with Edwards Creative Law. Byron focuses on music law and works with recording artists, producers, managers, music service businesses and festivals. Before law school, he was a television and new media producer. Based in Ottawa, Byron works with clients across Canada. He is also a board member of CityFolk, and member of Music BC and CARAS. Byron was awarded the Community Impact Award at the inaugural Capital Music Awards.

Avant cette présentation, les participant·es séjourneront et travailleront à Sporobole pendant deux semaines et demie, période durant laquelle iels bénéficieront de l’accompagnement de l’équipe de Sporobole, ainsi que d’un accès aux espaces et aux équipements nécessaires à la réalisation de leur nouvelle œuvre.

In the coming months, each participant will work with a mentor of their choosing to develop a new sound art project that will be presented at Sporobole on June 13, 2026. Prior to that presentation, participants will live and work at Sporoble for two-and-half weeks, during which time they will have the support of Sporobole’s staff, as well as access to the space and equipment necessary to complete their new work.
