GHALIAH @ NEDERLANDSE DANSDAGEN
@ghaliahconroy is one of three dance makers participating in the Virtual Residency of the
@nederlandsedansdagen this year. As part of the residency, the young creators present new work in the form of a film. Through
@plan.brabant Ghaliah was selected to create a piece, resulting in her dance film, Sunken Works/Don’t Bite.
Under the title Sunken Works, Ghaliah explores a series of works centered around the theme of the Human Zoo—the ‘exotic’ exhibitions that took place in Europe well into the 20th century, where people of color were displayed behind fences for public viewing. What impact does this history have on Black women today? Sunken Works/Don’t BITE is a cinematic exploration of the act of looking and being looked at. How does one respond to a gaze that reduces them to a stereotype? And how does one reclaim their autonomy? For this project, Ghaliah is collaborating with audiovisual artist

Starting October 4th, the films will be available to watch online. On October 5th, there will be an official program surrounding the premiere of the videos at Theater aan het Vrijthof. Tickets are available via the link in our bio.
