Would you believe a chicken farm can produce more waste than the entire city of London? Well, that’s reality in Ukraine, where the largest factory farm in Europe produces over 411,000 tonnes of manure, endangering the health of local residents by polluting their water supplies. Residents have discovered severe contamination of their water resources right next to the Vinnytsia Poultry Farm, and those protesting this damage have faced troubling retaliation. The @worldbank @IFC_org has repeatedly funded this project, harming the very people it's meant to help. 📽️ Watch the full video – link in bio. #humanrights #socialjustice #globaldevelopment #stopfinancingfactoryfarming

Now is a crucial moment to stop Nueva Pescanova building the world’s first octopus factory farm. The Spanish seafood company plans to : Trap these amazing wild animals in barren underwater tanks, leading to extreme stress, aggression & even cannibalism. Slaughter them in ice water, causing slow, agonising deaths. Feed the octopuses with thousands of tonnes of wild-caught fish, depleting our oceans & impacting vulnerable coastal communities. But we have a chance to prevent that from happening. Nueva Pescanova applied to the @puertos_de_las_palmas to build this farm - but they have not provided the detailed Environmental Impact Assessment in time. According to Spanish law, the port authority must now close their file. With an email, you can stand up for octopuses and make sure this cruel, unsustainable farm is stopped. Here’s why farming rabbits in cages must end – and three of the worst welfare consequences. Most farmed rabbits spend their lives suffering in uncomfortable, cramped and cruel cages 💔🐇 🪧 The European Commission must keep its promise to #EndtheCageAge

"We can, and should” transition to cage-free farming, Animal Welfare Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said yesterday. We were joined by farmers and MEPs from across the political spectrum for the launch of Institute for European Environmental Policy's report: Financing the transition to cage-free farming across the EU. This collaboration with @eurogroupforanimals comes at a crucial moment. Five years have passed since the European Commission committed to #EndtheCageAge. Yet CAP continues to trap farmers in outdated models, which prevent their transition to higher welfare, future-proof farming. It’s time for the Commission and national governments to put public money to public good, and #EndtheCageAge. Click the link in our story to find out more.

The European Commission committed to ban caged farming in 2021. But five years have passed and we’re still waiting. We’re counting down to the 5-year anniversary of the broken promise in June, with a spotlight on some of the most farmed species across Europe. First up: rabbits. 74 million of these highly social animals are farmed in the EU each year, most spending their entire life in a cage with less space than an A4 piece of paper per rabbit. Domestic rabbits in captivity typically live for 8 to 12 years. Farmed rabbits are slaughtered at around 10 weeks, so they don’t reach adulthood during their lifetime. Higher welfare farming models exist – yet farmers need support to transition. This starts with a total ban on cages. Some countries have already introduced legislation to ban barren cages for rabbits. Join our calls to the EU Commission to keep its promise and end this unnecessary cruelty. #EndtheCageAge

⏰ The clock is ticking, with 150 days to go. ⏰ In March, we launched a countdown marking the time left for the European Commission to deliver legislation to finally #EndTheCageAge. The countdown began at our World Cage Free Day event, where farmers and NGOs came together to call for a cage‑free future in Europe. Every day counts for the millions of animals still confined in cages across Europe. The EU Commission must keep their promise.

74 million rabbits are farmed in the EU, every year. Most spend their entire lives in cages – with less space than an A4 piece of paper. This prevents them from hopping, gnawing, or socialising. It’s cruel and no life for a sentient animal. Share this post and tag the europeancommission. It must keep its promise to #EndTheCageAge

Today’s vote was a lost opportunity - for food security, climate resilience, and animal welfare. It let EU citizens down at a time of food crisis. @europeanparliament has backed an AGRI committee report that is pushing us in the wrong direction, further supporting industrial animal agriculture. With global shocks, like today’s fertiliser crisis, exposing the fragility of our food system, we must focus on building resilience and sustainability and shift to nature-friendly farming. The upcoming EU Livestock Strategy must correct our course. Our position paper (linked in our story) outlines how we must: • Phase out intensive farming • Raise animal welfare standards • Prioritise food for people, not feed for animals • Support a just transition for farmers • Embed a One Health approach This is the moment for bold, ambitious action. More than 47,000 EU citizens have already called for change by signing our open letter demanding policies which prioritise feeding people, not factory farms. It’s time for the European Commission to lead the transition to a truly sustainable, higher welfare food system. Click the link in our story to find out more.

@brittanyferries are subjecting unweaned calves to gruelling sea journeys that no animal should have to endure. These journeys, from Ireland to France, can last over 18 hours. These journeys are not only traumatic – they are in breach of EU animal welfare law. In a series of face-to-face meetings, held jointly with our partners @fourpaws.international and @welfarmfr , Brittany Ferries acknowledged that transporting unweaned calves on these routes violates EU law – yet refused to stop doing it. By choosing business as usual, they are putting profit ahead of the welfare of vulnerable young animals. This cruelty must end. 🔗Visit the link in our bio to help us #BanLiveExports in the EU: @ciwf_eu

The world is waking up to the urgent need to change how we produce food - because the health of animals, people, and our planet go hand-in-hand. Animal welfare must be at the heart of that change. From phasing out cages to driving whole food system transformation, we are committed to ending factory farming across the globe by 2040 – recognising that animal welfare, human health, and environmental sustainability cannot be separated. Click the link in our story to find out more about our new Strategic Plan for 2026-2030.

The future of farming is cage-free. Dirk Koolen, from the Amsterdam-based city farm, @deherkomst , is not only prioritising the welfare of his free-range pigs but also creating a circular farming system, feeding the pigs unwanted food waste. He is just one of the pioneering farmers who has joined us to urge the EU Commission to #EndTheCageAge by the end of 2026.
