For our May installation, UPPER presents Altea Lunetta @altealunettaa and Gina Nuria Hayer @gnhayer . 2 young womanswear designers, 2 cities, 2 wardrobes, 2 approaches to shape and material, exploring the profound relationship between the body, identity, and the garments we inhabit. The installation runs from May 4th to June 4th, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 18:00, at our studio in Via Lulli 28. We are building a space to talk about co-design practices, on how networks are built, on what fuels autonomous creative work. In this first three-weeks long installation, we are showcasing the work of 16 young creatives from @HEADfashiondesign , generated through a dynamic collaboration with @TheCube and @Gruppocinque . Around the showcase of these garments, from March 9th to March 27th, we’ll be hosting open studios, school visits, focus groups with designers and experts, and a styling workshop. All free. Open daily on appointment. The goal: connect designers locally and internationally, build relationships with industry, and bring people together around making. Your results can get you fans and likes. Your process can get you a job, a partnership, a career. Showing how you got there is as important as what you made. It comes down to three things that matter greatly to anyone who might work with you: Your decision-making. In most creative roles you will be translating inputs — from a brief, a partner, a colleague. Showing how you moved from input to output gives your interlocutor a concrete idea of how you work: what you prioritise, how you test proposals, where you look for solutions. Your hard skills, in detail. Every project requires specific tools — a software, a technique, a construction method. Document them precisely. This tells a potential employer or collaborator exactly what you can contribute and where you fit in a team. Your collaborators. If you worked with a tailor, a factory, a photographer — show how that collaboration worked. Who did what, how you briefed them, how you managed the back and forth. This demonstrates you can coordinate a complex project involving different people and competencies. Your final work shows your ambition and creates an emotion. That matters enormously. But showing what's behind it helps you understand your own talents more clearly — and helps others understand how to work with you. These sketchbooks move from research to practice to garment. For Altea @altealunettaa , this meant studying the advertisements of the 1950s and 60s and the construction of home interiors–curtains, sofas, and aprons. This led to the decision about colors that would evoke the same nostalgia and feeling of the referenced time-period. For Gina @gnhayer , it started with a series of images she took while traveling in the summer, and a deep drive into the works of Tracey Emin, specifically, Exorcism of the Last Painting I Ever Made (1996). This inspired a practice of forcing materials like lace and latex to capture the tension and movement of female performance art. From the first photos and references to the final selection of textiles, these scans document the heart and evolution of two collections. Our studio is open for you to come by and look through their research portfolios, original sketchbooks, and the garments themselves. Questi quaderni di schizzi rappresentano un percorso che va dalla ricerca alla pratica, fino alla creazione di un capo d’abbigliamento. Per Altea, ciò ha significato studiare le pubblicità degli anni ‘50 e ‘60 e la progettazione degli interni domestici: tende, divani e grembiuli. Questo ha portato alla scelta dei colori, che avrebbero evocato la stessa nostalgia e le stesse sensazioni del periodo di riferimento. Per Gina, tutto è iniziato con una serie di immagini scattate durante un viaggio estivo e un approfondimento sulle opere di Tracey Emin, in particolare su “Exorcism of the Last Painting I Ever Made” (1996). Questo ha ispirato una pratica che prevedeva di manipolare materiali come pizzo e lattice per catturare la tensione e il movimento della performance art femminile. in the studio with Altea @altealunettaa and Gina @gnhayer . We asked them to explain the construction of the garments and the research behind their collections. Altea: “My collection draws on the aesthetics of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the years of the economic boom. I worked on the idea of clothing as a social mask, transforming physical objects like bags and packaging into garments. I am interested in analyzing how individual value is often linked to consumption choices: that is why I used materials that reference the obsession with luxury and the ephemeral.” Gina: “I built 8 looks starting from the replica of eight performances by female artists. I visually documented these actions and took notes on how the body moves within the clothes. The design of each piece derives from concrete gestures: the way the hand grips the material or how the body reacts to a specific action. I sought to translate physical movements and reactions into wearable structures.” The installation will be open from May 4th to June 4th, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 18:00, at our studio in Via Lulli 28. During the 2025 Antwerp Fashion Awards, @gruppocinquefabrics  chose @lucas_lopes_barcellos  to provide their full support for the sourcing and development of innovative, premium-quality textiles. Gruppocinque awarded the 2BA student at @antwerpfashionofficial whose work demonstrates exceptional attention to material quality and research, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainability, technical innovation, and visionary thinking. Over the past weeks, Lucas has been working on his own fabric recipes: a burn-out technique on cotton and nylon — a twist on Como’s devoré tradition — dyed with direct and reactive colors, mixing recipes from scratch, selecting from an archive of printing screens and modifying them to follow his graphic inspirations. The project was facilitated by @helloclutter , who works closely with Gruppocinque to build relationships between young designers and the Italian textile industry. In the coming months, Lucas and other designers from Antwerp and abroad will be coming to Milan to work in the spaces of UPP++ER. Follow along — we can’t wait to see the finished collection!
