What does it take to turn promising IP into a company? CIC and uCity Square hosted the IP to Impact summit in University City Science Center's Quorum space to convene researchers, founders, and ecosystem partners to explore this question. Throughout the day, participants connected with experts across the industry, gaining practical insight into the early stages of building a venture. Sessions focused on where to begin, how to tell a compelling story, and how to navigate access to capital, making the path from idea to impact more tangible. Over one year ago, we reopened our renovated lab space in St. Louis, marking a significant investment in the region’s growing biotech and life sciences ecosystem. This expansion was about more than upgraded space. It reflects the momentum we continue to see across St. Louis as a place where scientific companies can start, grow, and scale. Over the past year, we’ve welcomed new clients and scientists into the community, expanded our partnerships, added new equipment, and increased the value of our shared resources by more than $250,000. Each of these milestones strengthens the environment our members rely on to do their best work. It’s great to see the space come to life, with lab benches full and shared equipment in use. This year, we welcomed an incredible group of women to CIC St. Louis for our fourth annual For the Women event, hosted in partnership with @cortex_stl and Filament. The event featured a dynamic workshop with Lauren Colbert of Filament, followed by a vibrant community social. From meaningful conversations to discovering local, women-owned businesses, the energy in the room was unforgettable. CIC Catalyst helped establish the frameworks and partnership structure that led to the launch of the National Innovation Quarter. This effort was led by our clients: the National Landing Business Improvement District, Arlington Economic Development, and Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, with support from partners including Amazon, Virginia Tech, JBG Smith and others across the region. The launch follows more than a year of work grounded in Catalyst’s Scoping Report, developed in partnership with Arup and Cambridge Econometrics. Scenario modeling highlighted the potential regional impact: compared to baseline growth, a high-growth innovation district scenario could support 17% job growth over ten years, generate demand for up to 10.8 million square feet of additional office space, and produce $1.7M–$8.7M in incremental tax revenue. Through this analysis and extensive stakeholder engagement, Catalyst helped build the broad regional alignment needed to bring the National Innovation Quarter to life.
