What happens when you trust the ocean as a site for vulnerability, growth, and play? Magic. Artists, creative collaborators, and partners carogutz and Gwen Mustelier modeled in Chromat’s dreamy navy wave jacquard fabric. The resulting images were then turned into a stunning quilt by @waterbbex , which was featured in the latest issue of @lohimag ! @waterbbex invites us to step into the ocean and dissolve together in its darkness. Bex is an interdisciplinary artist, fashion designer, and founder of the inclusive fashion label @chromat . When they moved to Miami in 2018, the ocean quickly became their conduit for change. It washed away the old and made room for the new. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Miami heals everything 🌊 Bex’s previous work in this series lived in daylight. For Issue 05, we pushed each other to move into the dark. Why the dark? Because chaos lives there, and chaos is where new meaning is born. The result: Bex’s photographs, inkjet printed on textile and hand-stitched into a quilt titled “Queer Atlantics (Where I Dissolved).” This piece is part of Bex’s ongoing textile series exploring oceanic intimacy and queer embodiment in Florida’s waterways. Accompanied by a poem from @mikah.amani , we’re transported to a world where we’re encouraged to feel, love, and transform. The shoot that sparked a little editorial gremlin in me. When @waterbbex posted they were looking for a hairstylist for @chromat ‘s last season I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I got the chance to work with beautiful models, beautiful hair, establish trust and care and play in more creative but structured way than my day to day behind the chair work.
