I took a trip to Middrige in County Durham to visit the Middrige Quarry, where fairies are said to live according to local legend. It was a beautiful day and the Hawthorn blossom was out in full force. The original Middridge Quarry was opened in the nineteenth century to provide limestone for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It was reopened after the Second World War, when rare fossils were discovered there. Amazingly, the Middridge Quarry is now considered the second most important site in the world for fossils from the Permian Era (299 to 252 million years ago). It was later declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The quarry was linked to the village via a tramway. Although the line was turned into a parish path, you can still with the stone abutments today. No fairies were seen on my trip, although I didn’t walk around the quarry nine times. I came away with more questions than answers (in a good way), plus lots of images to flesh out and fill the story. πŸ§šβœ¨πŸ“š #NorthEastFolklore #NorthumbrianTales

β›― We recently visited oral storyteller Chris Adriaanse @christhestoryteller at his home studio in Berwick-upon-Tweed for a fascinating conversation about place, memory and the power of a good story. πŸ“– Chris discovered oral storytelling in 2017 and has told stories in schools, museums, festivals and storytelling clubs in the UK. πŸ§ͺ Originally, he trained as a scientist and, after completing a PhD in chemistry in 2010, he discovered his fascination with words and stories. πŸ‰ What are the differences between scientific storytelling and the telling of folktales? πŸ—£οΈ How does written storytelling differ from oral storytelling – especially in how the teller relates to the readers or listeners, and in the story’s ability to shift and adapt according to the context of its telling and re-telling? 🏠 How do stories shape the places we love? πŸ”— Link in bio to read Chris's fascinating thoughts on these questions - and more! @createberwick @berwicklitfest @pictorial.photography @southernuplandspartnership @destinationtweeduk πŸ“· Photos: 1.
