I took a trip to Middrige in County Durham to visit the Middrige Quarry, where fairies are said to live according to local legend. It was a beautiful day and the Hawthorn blossom was out in full force.
The original Middridge Quarry was opened in the nineteenth century to provide limestone for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It was reopened after the Second World War, when rare fossils were discovered there.
Amazingly, the Middridge Quarry is now considered the second most important site in the world for fossils from the Permian Era (299 to 252 million years ago). It was later declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The quarry was linked to the village via a tramway. Although the line was turned into a parish path, you can still with the stone abutments today.
No fairies were seen on my trip, although I didnβt walk around the quarry nine times.
I came away with more questions than answers (in a good way), plus lots of images to flesh out and fill the story.
