Here’s our Julie, celebrating a rare win in her on-going life with Blood Cancer. Last week Julie received the amazing news that her stem call transplant was a success and that currently there are no cancer cells evident in her body. This means that, following the torture of the last 12 months, she has won her current battle against plasma call leukaemia! But as we know with this disease, a victory doesn’t always mean the war is won. Julie has been blessed and will be terrorising the streets of Streatham for years, but others haven’t been so lucky, and we are constantly receiving terrible news from those that have succumbed, which is why raising money for cancer research is so important, and why we continue to ride the fireflies tour. Julie and I would be really grateful for your support in raising this year as I ride over 1100kms over the Dolomites and The Alps for Blood Cancer research, please help us if you can. Someone that you know and love is fighting cancer right now, and going through a really tough time. You can help them by supporting me on this years Fireflies ride as we cycle across the dolomites to raise money for those that are suffering - like @jules_arscott - The link to donate is in my bio. Thank you
This is our mate Julie, some of you may already know her. Julie is a south-London legend; puller of pints, the high priestess of hospitality and taker of zero shit from anyone.
This time last year, Julie was wondering why she was constantly getting sick and catching every virus going, after a lot of this she finally went down with pneumonia and was eventually hospitalised. After tests there, it was revealed that she had Plasma Cell Leukemia (PCL), a rare and aggressive plasma cell cancer that acts as an aggressive form of multiple myeloma, which causes extreme fatigue, bone pain, kidney issues, and infections.
She was immediately put on 6 months chemo, taking tablets daily and having weekly injections, with the inevitable awful side effects. Then in December she had an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant, which uses a patient’s own healthy stem cells, collected and frozen beforehand, to replace the bone marrow destroyed by high-dose chemotherapy or radiation. This procedure allows for intense, curative cancer treatment while mitigating damage to blood-producing cells. She has now just had a Bone Marrow Biopsy (as painful as it sounds) and its waiting on the results - fingers crossed.
Even for a tough cookie like Julie, this has been a life-changing event and an unenviable journey. But she is the reason I’m riding the Fireflies Tour again - we will go on another unenviable journey over 1000kms of mountainous terrain in 8 days to raise money for the Imperial Blood Cancer charity, to make sure that people like her, and all other cancer sufferers, can continue to get better treatment, both now and in the future.
This one’s for you Jools - and all of our other loved ones who are suffering.
