All smiles after our fantastic workshop of Deep Water on Friday! It was so thrilling to hear @carocomposes 's opera come to life with this incredible team of artists! We're excited to get rehearsals underway in May. As a company that exclusively performs works by living composers, we are dedicated to giving new works time to develop and grow. A workshop is a great way to do this: get the music up on its feet, ask questions, provide feedback, and give the composer a chance to make any changes they see fit before the formal rehearsal process begins. 🌲 MEET THE COMPOSERS | STEPHEN LEWIS ✏️ ABOUT STEPHEN: Dr. Stephen Lewis is a composer and concert pianist based in Portland, Oregon. His compositions “[invite] us to tread, however carefully, along unknown paths” (New Classic LA) while exploring the terrain between sound as physical sensation and sound as cultural signifier. By turns “elegant” (San Diego Reader), “powerfully elegiac” (The WholeNote), and “riveting and visceral,” (State of the Arts), Stephen’s music explores the relationship between humans and our environment, the creation of different scales of time, human connection in a world dominated by the necessity to work to have a life, and the persistence and limitations of narrative as a fundamental aspect of human understanding and experience. My next Modernist Piano Series recital is this Friday, 11/14 at 7 PM and Saturday, 11/15 at 4 PM. Called Diachronfluence, this program features the premiere of my new Fantasy for piano surrounded by pieces that particularly inspired me as a composer by Chopin, Elliott Carter, Brahms, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Ravel, and Ligeti. Both shows are at my home studio, with limited seating. Saturday's show will be live streamed, and the live stream will also be available to watch for anyone with the link afterwards, as well. Please note: We are not currently accepting commission proposals. We are seeking: *Operas with piano accompaniment or small chamber ensemble (piano reduction also required) *Art songs, arias, duets, & ensembles with piano *Music that features sopranos & mezzos in the majority of roles *Operas with small casts (approx. 2-6 singers) *We can particularly program works for 1-3 singers + piano that can be rehearsed in a short amount of time.
