From my newest video on @adorama TV... This one is all about making a golden studio on a tiny budget! I thought this was going to be super easy. I bought 10 large gold/silver emergency blankets (also known as Space Blankets) carefully attached them to two of the walls in my small home studio and then realised the hard work was just beginning. Reflections!!!! I tried soft light but hard light produced a much more manageable hot spot. After that I just had to stop EVERYTHING in the room reflecting in the gold! The solution? Hang lots of white sheets to form 2 white walls which reflect as gold. Of course with all that warm light bouncing around getting perfect skin tones is out of the question but I love the maximum gold look. This super colourful set-up was how I finished my LED portrait lighting demo at the very first South West Photo Show @swphotoshow in Exeter last Saturday. It's not a "normal" portrait lighting look, it breaks lots of traditional lighting rules and I absolutely LOVED it! I also ran a flash for portraits lighting demo at the show and while LED can do a lot of the same looks, I wanted to show that LED can also do lighting looks that flash just can't copy! Hence the rolling rainbow of colour. From my newest video on @adorama TV... This one is all about turning one small length of fabric look it's much bigger and along the way to make an image that has sharpness and motion! Link in my bio to the full length video. There's a couple of things to note here. First is fabric is more of a net fabric than a sheer fabric. I found that it works best to allow Chloe's face to come through. Next, for lighting I choose to use LED for this set up. It made the second set of blurry fabric photos much easier as well as giving me beautiful light for the main portrait. From my new video on @adorama TV... This one is all about creating an underwater style image without getting my feet wet! The most essential part of this look was some old (as in crumpled) Mylar. I put the Mylar above Chloe and used a flash / snoot combo to light only the Mylar just in front of my model. The reflections from the silver Mylar lit both Chloe's face and the background wall from above... Just like being underwater! A second soft fill light was added and then I roped in Freya to use our studio mini leaf blower (not one used outside) to add upwards "buoyancy" to Chloe's hair! I also added some Photoshop magic in the form of FREE light ray actions... But for those you'll need to watch the full video! Turn off the room lights. Turn on the modelling light! Why it matters is covered in detail in my new video on @adorama TV but in brief, the modelling light does more than you might think. I use the modelling light to get a rough idea on how the light might fall on my model but also to help my camera focus faster, check for catch lights in the models eyes and even to help me check if a light is actually turned on!
