This is one of those rooms where the existing light is doing most of the work for you, so the real question is how to add to it without distracting from what's already there? 
Gear: Canon 5D Mark IV, 24-105 f/4L IS II USM at f/4, 1/50, ISO 320. One Flashpoint 100 at 1/16 power, placed behind the column to camera right. 
Why it works: the room is already lit by the sconces, which gives you warm ambient throughout. Dropping the strobe to 1/16 power and hiding it behind the column means it adds just enough light to define the bride against the doorway without overpowering the existing light in the room. The shutter at 1/50 lets the warm sconces register fully. 
 The result is a true split: bright side from the hidden strobe, shadow side falling off naturally into the ambient. A few things worth knowing if you want to replicate it: Hiding the light behind something in the scene (column, doorway, piece of furniture) lets you add a clean directional source without seeing the light itself in the frame. Low power is the move when you have strong ambient. 1/16 is doing real work here because the room is already bright. Full power would flatten everything you're trying to preserve. Drag the shutter to keep ambient warmth. 1/50 at ISO 320 is well below sync speed, which means the existing room light gets time to register. Sync speed would have killed the sconces. I taught a photo walk for Adorama a few weeks ago. Started at the store on 18th Street, walked toward Union Square, brought an assistant and a small strobe in a softbox. That was the whole kit. (Because hey, it’s NYC and I’ve learned to travel light.) In an hour, I stopped nine times. Not nine images. Nine teaching moments. Nine little conversations about what I was seeing and why. Most photo walks are about gear. Which lens, which body, which modifier, which preset. Mine wasn't. Mine was about the SEEING, which is much harder to teach but much more useful. I got down and uncomfortably close to the sidewalk to turn an unremarkable building into the vertical history of New York. We made it to Union Square; I looked at the trees, decided they were boring, and shot the arches at the north end of the park instead. We closed on a mannequin frozen mid-run in a storefront window. I had the couple run past it and dropped my shutter wayyyyyyy down. The mannequin came out sharp because he wasn't moving, obvs, he’s not a person. The REAL people came out as pure motion blur on either side of him. The whole industry has spent the last several years training photographers to make couples stand still, look serious, and gaze meaningfully at each other in soft light. That is one kind of photograph. It is not the only kind. And it is definitely NOT the only kind I am interested in making for you. For the couples reading this who are thinking about hiring a photographer: nine teaching stops in an hour, on a walk where I was deliberately slowing down to explain to other photographers what I was doing and why. Imagine what happens when I am not slowing down. Imagine what happens when the only thing I am paying attention to is YOU. That is what you are hiring when you hire me. Not the gear. Not the editing. The eye, the ability to use it, and the willingness to touch my brand new Uniqlo denim to the suspiciously sticky streets of the Flatiron district. Single light setup, sunset, indoor pool room with a big window behind the couple. Gear: Canon 5D Mark IV, 24-105 f/4 at 24mm, f/4, 1/200, ISO 200. One Flashpoint 100 outside the window at full power, firing in through the glass. Why it works: at 1/200 and ISO 200, the ambient inside the room drops dark. The strobe outside is the most meaningful light source, so it flashes through the window and renders the couple as a clean silhouette with a rim of warm light wrapping around them. No on-camera flash, no second light filling the front. The pool reflection doubles the look. A few things worth knowing if you want to replicate it: Place the couple directly between you and the light. The closer they are to the window, the tighter the rim. Full power on the Flashpoint 100 is what lets you shoot through glass at f/4. If you stop down or move the light back, you’ll lose the wrap. Shoot at sync speed (1/200) to kill as much room ambient as possible. That’s what gives you the dark, moody interior instead of a flat exposure.
