Flowers for my father [Carpet] (2023)
Discarded imitation leather,
thread 200 × 266 cm
The work develops a visual language that addresses the relationship between a boy and his father. Its four elements - Carpet, Poem, Chair, and Music - embody the loss of connection within this relationship: the distance that separates father and son, as well as the father’s disconnection from himself. Fairytales take many forms: heroic and magic tales, farces, animal stories, etiological narratives, mythological substances and humours anecdotes. Fairy tales seldom refer directly to reality or individual experiences; rather, they address fundamental aspects of human existence, such as imagination, transformation, deception, love, and belonging.
To tell a fairytale is not merely to recount a story, but also to activate a centuries-old tradition. All cultures practice orally transmitted forms of storytelling, and in sharing stories and listening to one another, we are offered a chance to participate in a collective and identity-shaping experience.
The upcoming exhibition Fairytale at Gruppe:Motto brings together eighteen contemporary positions that investigate the magical within the medium of art. The show engages with intimate stories and mystical memories, with magical symbols, childlike play, and parallel worlds.
It opens on 16 October at 19:00 at Galerie Gruppe:Motto, Speckstraße 85, 20355 Hamburg, and culminates in a ghostly Halloween gathering on 31 October, inviting everyone to practice staying receptive to wonder together.
