💫🌍 Did you know that every summer, thousands of sea turtle hatchlings lose their way, not due to predators, but because of thoughtless lighting? 🌊🐢 We are grateful to @donatellabianchiofficial and @rai1official for giving visibility to the work of @life_turtlenest led by @legambiente . We spoke about threats to sea turtles and presented the new Guidelines for Safeguarding Sea Turtles from Light Pollution. 🤩✨ Then, the cameras witnessed the most powerful reminder of why this matters: hatchlings emerging from the sand and reaching the sea under a safe, dark sky. 🌟💙 Let's keep raising awareness, fostering coexistence, and promoting sustainable tourism after dark. #SeaTurtles #LightPollution #carettacaretta

In our last Advocate Action meeting, Chiara Carucci mentioned “Lampenflora”. A term many of us had never heard! Have you? Lampenflora, “flora of lamps” refers to mosses, algae, and plants that grow in caves near artificial light sources. These fragile ecosystems are meant to stay in darkness, but with light comes unwanted change. Lampenflora can damage delicate cave formations, degrade historic cave art, and disrupt native species that rely on darkness to survive. As we know, light can have unintentional consequences. And in the wrong place, even a little glow can shift entire ecosystems. While lampenflora illustrates these impacts in an extreme way, even lights left on in our garden or streaming into a nearby area at night can impact what’s growing. 🌟 Want to learn more about Chiara’s work and watch the full Advocate Action presentation? 🌊🐢 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 Yesterday we celebrated 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘢 𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘺... and we talked about light! Because sometimes, protecting marine life starts by switching it off, or designing it better❣️ I’m proud to share the release of the 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙇𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 in coastal areas, commissioned by @legambiente and developed under their guidance within the EU-funded @life_turtlenest project. So many summer nights spent with @carettainvista helped shape this document, as well as working closely with researchers and conservationists to protect nesting sites from the growing threat of artificial light at night. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳? Because excessive or poorly designed lighting can prevent adult turtles from nesting and disorient hatchlings, often with deadly consequences. 'luminarie' You know it's summer in the south of Italy when the fairy lights called "luminarie" adorn our little towns. This is a "cassa armonica", a pavilion built as a sound box for the final concert of the marching band. As the summer holidays are coming closer, I'd like to wish you all the same joy I still feel any time I see these sparkling lights... like that little kid, who looked enchanted at the fairy lights reflecting in the sea, and told her mother: I want to become a designer of fairy lights!
