Lafitte wasn’t just a horse, he was a turning point. Through him, I found not only a partner, but a deeper purpose to give back and help other horses find the care and second chances they deserve. First responders carry what most people never see — and over time, that weight can become something they carry alone. Through the EQUUS Foundation’s support of the 2026 Horses for Mental Health Campaign, healing is being approached differently. Horses offer a grounded, nonjudgmental space where first responders can reconnect, regulate, and begin to release the emotional weight of their work through presence rather than words. “We are committed to protecting horses and strengthening the horse-human bond in ways that improve lives on both ends of the lead rope,” said Dr. Karin Bump, EQUUS Foundation Chief Operating Officer. “Science is catching up to what we see every day — horses have an extraordinary ability to help people feel seen, grounded, and safe. Because horses respond to what we feel rather than what we say, they create powerful moments of awareness and connection that can open the door to real healing.” In honor of May — Mental Health Awareness Month, this story highlights the importance of alternative pathways to healing and the powerful bond between horses and humans.
