Today's #metalcoremonday is presented by Salt Lake City legends Cherem and their album In the Land of the Dead, originally released in 2003 and re-released by New Eden Records in 2004 and 2005.
This album is an absolute banger and one of the heaviest metalcore albums of the early '90s. Heavily influenced by Earth Crisis's sound, Cherem brings an album with some of the heaviest riffs ever heard, with vocals that sometimes border on death metal. There are parts of this record that sound pretty similar to old-school deathcore, where hardcore and metalcore riffs are accompanied by death metal vocals.
With a clear vegan straight edge message, the album has the militant metalcore/hardcore sound that we saw in the early 2000s. It's pure straight edge and vegan rage in action, made even clearer by the use of reporter samples talking about actions carried out by straight edge groups in the late '90s, heavy as fuck, but I don't know if those samples are real.
It's an iconic album with an iconic sound and one of the best releases of the early 2000s.
Also, shout-out to the final track, "I Hate George Bush," which has an incredible rap over the instrumental of one of the tracks. Simply incredible!
