OUT NOW: K-NOW! Korean Video Art Today
Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at @masilugano , “K-NOW! Korean Video Art Today” invites readers to reflect on the role of video art as a tool for perception, memory, and the narration of the contemporary.
Featuring essays by Francesca Benini (@francescaeleonorabenini ) and Je Yun Moon (curators of the exhibition), as well as Adeena Mey (@adeena_mey ), the catalogue provides an overview of the history of video art in Korea, while also examining the video medium itself and the broader Korean art scene.
Interviews with the participating artists—Ayoung Kim (@ayoung___kim ), Chan-kyong Park, Jane Jin Kaisen (@kjanejin ), Sungsil Ryu (@sungsilryu ), Sojung Jun, Heecheon Kim, Onejoon Che (@onejoonche ), and 업체eobchae (@eobchae )—offer further insight into the genesis and significance of the works presented in the exhibition.
본 전시에 소개되는 배경화는 1963년부터 2024년까지 보산동에서 운영된 현대사진관에서 실제로 사용되었던 것으로, 한 시대의 노동과 기술, 그리고 지역의 집단적 상상력을 담고 있다. 특히 이 사진관은 민중미술 작가 김용태가 DMZ 작업에서 직접 등장시키고 기록한 사진관 중 하나로, 주변부 장소성을 통해 상징적 구조를 읽어내려 했던 그의 작업 맥락과도 자연스럽게 연결된다. 이러한 점에서 현대사진관은 김용태의 작업에서부터 오늘날의 동두천까지 이어지는 시각문화의 연속성과 변화를 확인할 수 있는 중요한 지점이며, 동두천이라는 장소에 축적되어 온 이미지적·사회적 층위가 어떻게 예술적 해석의 대상이 되어 왔는지를 보여준다.
지금 스페이스 아프로아시아(아프로아시아 스튜디오)와 아프로아시아 - 에코 뮤지엄 두 공간에서는 최원준 작가의 개인전 <背影畫聲 배영화성> (등뒤에서 오는 울림, Echoes from the Back, Mkpọtụ gara aga na-alaghachi)이 열리고 있습니다.
작가의 신작 '背影畫聲 배영화성' 시리즈(2025) 외에도 아프로아시아 컬렉티브가 제작한 다큐멘터리 <동두천 뉴타운>(2023)과 '아프로지아: 파우 파우' 시리즈(2025)를 관람하실 수 있으니 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.
별도의 오프닝은 마련되지 않았으며, 전시는 내년 2월 28일까지 계속 됩니다.

Space AfroAsia (Director: Sun A MOON) and CHE Onejoon will host the interdisciplinary conference “AFRO-ASIAN IMAGINATION: MEMORIES AFTER U.S. MILITARY BASES AND TRANSOCEANIC FUTURES” on Saturday, December 6.
Scholars from a wide range of fields—including history, American studies, art history, and intermedia arts—along with local residents, activists, and artists, will come together to explore camptown culture surrounding U.S. military bases and to examine the possible trajectories of Afro-Asian discourse. In particular, this will be the first occasion in Korea to introduce Afro-Asian discourse from a range of diverse perspectives.
The conference will be held from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the AfroAsia Eco-Museum and will be conducted with Korean–English consecutive interpretation. 👉Camp Bosan combines the characteristics of a multicultural city with its historicity. ‘AfroAsia Tour’ proposes a different way to look at the newly changing appearance of Dongducheon and the hidden history and places of Dongducheon through music and poetry. Tour locations encompass the history of military base towns in the past, the new multicultural regionality that African immigrants are currently inflowing, and the ecological environment of Bosan-dong that needs to be protected. The tour proposes to look at and experience the heritage of Dongducheon from the past image of Dongducheon.
👉This year’s tour will be held once each in September, October, and November. The November tour will take place on Saturday, November 9th (SUN).
