“Thank You” Night Lights for @jonald.dudd at @thefutureperfect made from pressing plastic bags with a heat press. We’ve been experimenting with different ways to use plastic bags since 2018. They are made from HDPE, a very recyclable type of plastic but their form can get caught in the machines used to process recycling and so are not recycled. They also have very little material in them so any effort used to return it to a pellet form would get very little return. The value of the bag is in the story the graphic tells. As an added bonus, heat pressing many bags together makes it rigid which turns them into something that can be recycled. Although NYC “banned” plastic bags in 2020, six years later, we still find them accumulating at the studio and what we can’t use, we press by color and put into the recycling stream.

As molten lava cools, bubbles of gas are sealed within the stone. Over time, silica-rich water seeps into these voids, depositing mineral layers one after another, each slow accumulation fixing itself into colorful bands. What remains is an extravagant record of duration, agate. The rose heads are held by sculptural brass stems, their joints first secured with structural silver solder. Then through an innovative technique, solder is meticulously layered upon these joints, then ground to achieve transitions of exquisite softness, marrying strength with elegance. The Stone Rose Chandelier now available with Rose Heads made from agate. Handmade to order in New York City. Each rose is unique due to availability of stones. Sold exclusively @thefutureperfect

The Walnut Coffee Table The smooth, stone inserts are carved out in a range of unique patterns, based on the walnut shell cross -sections, connecting to the diversity of the natural world and geological time. We experimented with glass inserts bonded with an array of different walnut shell to create a kind of specimen collection. Ultimately, we realized we can’t treat the shells like the stones of our Geology Collection, as they are porous and they remain a beautiful experiment. Remember - be gentle, travertine is fragile. Materials: American walnut wood Stone Glass

We made 2 submissions to @thefutureperfect ‘s “Jugs” show. Kai made “55 Cubic Inches”, which is how much volume is inside, inspired by the chassis of cars like the Porsche 917 and 1961 Lotus Formula 1 which used tubular aluminum space frames to circulate oil from engine to radiator. Constructed from 1.5” 6061 aluminum tube, it is accessed through a welded on gas cap. Chen made “Pitch Bucket” from a maple log and some Douglas Fir boards roughly screwed together and coated in pine pitch, a combination of pine resin with charcoal. Inspired by Apache water jugs which were woven like a basket and waterproofed with pine resin, a naturally antimicrobial material.

Tree Pussy Stool The wood was found on the ground. It comes from city trees exhausted from living, rotting. In Brooklyn, people treat the dirt rectangles around trees as if they are capable of transmutation. Lean a flat-screen TV there and it will come back in the spring as flowering weeds. Chen and Williams leave segments of tree trunks in their original forms and find strong silhouettes—athletic crotches like Brancusi’s emergent Torso of a Young Man. These wild forms were spared the milling process but they’re joined to woodworking tradition, grids, and metal. Retaining the roundness of wood keeps the pieces in tension with Chen and Kai’s work with stones, cross-sectioned yet rough and part whole. Seeing the raw center of a material and its natural contour prompts us to imagine the space around it. Where could it have come from? Where is its other half? Separated now, where might it go?

The Geffen Petal Sconce was derived from our 2022 custom chandelier for David Geffen Hall @lincolncenter The piece references the tradition in ancient Roman Pentecostal Mass, wherein rose petals are dropped from the Pantheon’s oculus to symbolize the descent of the Holy Spirit.  @kaitsienwilliams the CCKW master welder seen here bringing Petal parts together by hand in the Sunset Park workshop. Available in single or double petals. Finish options: spun, polished, satin matte.  Custom inquiries always welcome. Lead time is 4 weeks!

Caviar Sconces direct an illuminated lens onto a textured surface, crafting a portal into another realm. The black granules, reminiscent of caviar, are composed of steel shot—an industrial sanding material—bound together with epoxy. An open-faced mold shapes the sconce’s back with precise technical form, while the top surface is left to chance, shaped by the freefall of the “caviar” granules. This duality—material both shaped and self-forming—embodies our design philosophy of collaborating with materials, allowing their inherent nature to guide the process. Since its inception, the sconce has evolved to incorporate other materials: pyrite, quartz, brass globules, sand, and garnet, each adding its own voice to the conversation between form and substance. Each piece is unique due to process.
