Randall drove from Bristol to Brixton to meet me for our shoot. We had spoken about it for a while. Finally it was happening.
My photography studio was opposite Brixton Academy, close to Stockwell skate park.
Round the corner a random wall of graffiti bombs and tags had been buffed out, yet again. This had left behind a beautiful patchwork of oblongs in various shades of green.
To me the wall looked like a large Rothko.
I’d wanted to use it for a background for a while.
Randall stepped out of the car resplendent in a long jacket, matching trousers and a trademark bucket hat.
All in green.
Effortlessly stylish as ever, Randall epitomised street culture, DJ Culture, Jungle culture.
The colour match was too good an opportunity to miss. Let’s just start the shoot here, now.

That’s the shoot done already we joked.
Then we headed up to the studio for stories, more laughter and a couple more photos.
Like music, preparing the elements in advance means sometimes the best piece just comes together naturally. Randall was a natural.
It’s fitting to see so many artists now painting this portrait of Randall on graff walls, almost back to where it began.
Another image from the studio side of our shoot is also going up, maybe i’ll tell the story of that one another time.

I first started listening to Navigator on ‘One in the jungle’ (BBC Radio 1) around 1995! I then first met him at Rollercoaster, an event we used to sponsor at Brixton’s Mass nightclub (shouts to @dvsmc_ , Tyrone & Rosie @alittlelusciousness for putting in those epic gigs!)
As a young whippersnapper, Navi invited me over to his digs, cooked me lunch and treated me like a brother, and I’ll be forever grateful for the love and support he showed me.
A true legend in the game.
