For the next few weeks I’ll be updating my data sonification portfolio here on Instagram, with a series of short videos about my most significant projects in the field. This week post is about THE LIST, one of my first encounters with data sonification. THE LIST is a site specific multichannel sound sculpture that broadcast an algorithmic composition made from the numbers included in @unitedlistofdeath List of Deaths. Lasting around 2 and a half hours, can be arranged in a 4 channel / 8 channel surround system or in a specific configuration for the place that will host it. What better way to celebrate this year’s Drone Day than with a live performance at a deconsecrated abbey? And even better if part of a collective celebration, with more than twenty artists taking turns on stage, with a table of synthesizers, instruments and noise generators, all to bring their own idea of drone music. I am more than happy to have participated in this event, to have met and re-meet so many fantastic musicians-it was a bit like feeling at home! THE LIST x @startsaluzzo THE LIST è una scultura sonora che cerca di tradurre in suono i numeri delle morti lungo i flussi migratori verso l’europa. Trasmette una composizione algoritmica realizzata a partire dai numeri riportati nell’elenco delle vittime stilato da UNITED Against Refugee Deaths. Ogni secondo equivale a un giorno e, nelle sue tre ore di durata, attraversa gli anni dal 1993 al 2025. Abbandonando la forma scritta il dato diventa esperienza immersiva, slegato dalla retorica costantemente associata al tema migratorio. La fruizione richiede quindi una nuova riflessione per tornare ad affrontare questa somma di numeri come elementi da un valore inestimabile: vite umane, impossibili da raccontare, doverose da quantificare. [eng] THE LIST is a sound sculpture that tries to translate the number of deaths along migration routes towards Europe into sound. It plays an algorithmic composition based on the numbers reported in the list of victims compiled by UNITED Against Refugee Deaths. Every second corresponds to day, and over the course of its three-hour duration, It spans the years from 1993 to 2025. By moving away from the written form, data becomes an immersive experience, detached from the rhetoric constantly associated with the topic of migration. “Like Train Whistles” is my new album, released by the amazing Triple Moon Records label. In the summer of 2024, I took a long road trip through Finland, driving from Helsinki up to Rovaniemi. The landscape, the profound isolation of some places, the silence, and the immense skies resonated with me like no other place and reverberated in my daily routine in the months to come. Later that year, I got myself a Microfreak synthesizer, returning to a full-analog, voice-limited instrument after a long time. In a series of exploratory improvisations, I led out the raw material that became the foundation of this release: ieratic, sometimes glacial, deserted soundscapes that involuntarily resonated with my memories of Finland, paired with field recordings from my trip and additional layers of synths and noises. “Like Train Whistles” spawned from that, a serendipity-built, analog-driven recount of a memory trip. It comes as a limited-edition CD that you can preorder on Triple Moon Records’ Bandcamp. Quattordici loop di diversa natura si inseguono per mezzora, creando incastri, sovrapposizioni e percorsi sempre nuovi. Corde del pianoforte, chitarre suonate con l’archetto, fischi a vapore, campane e field recordings: tanti materiali diversi hanno trovato spazio in questa composizione che si riavvolge su se stessa, senza mai tornare al punto d’origine. [eng] I built the soundscape that accompanies ACUFONIA, drawing inspiration from the materials and structures that make it up. Fourteen loops of varying nature chase one another over half an hour, creating interlocks, overlaps, and ever-changing paths. Piano strings, guitars played with a bow, steam whistles, bells, and field recordings: many different materials have found a place in this composition that winds back on itself, never returning to its starting point. Some Eurorack modular madness here, running metallic samples through a very transformative chain of effects. The original sample is a field recording of some thick metallic wires; it passes through the Delay module first, with very high feedback and low timing, to get something closer to a comb filter. Then the μBurst does some granular processing, and in the end, the always nice delay from flamma gives everything some space (and some bitcrush in the repetitions). #sounddesign #modularsynth #darkambientmusic #noisemusic #experimentalelectronic

Inspired by some fellow friends and musicians, I got myself a very cheap mixer to experiment with no-input techniques. And I loved it. The weird noises you can get from patching two channels into each other are incredible: from chirping noise textures to wild drones, from ear-piercing screams to lowercase glitches, everything sounds amazing. And it’s a very “tactile” way to make music, where each infinitesimal change bears enormous variations in the resulting sounds. That’s literal chaos there. And again, I love it! By the way, you should check Andrea Gava’s (aka @andreijrublev ) stuff if you like this kind of noises! Back at the Donner Syn Bass, this time making drones. The idea here is to run a very fast sequence of notes from a chord and wash it into huge amounts of reverb: this way, you get a seemingly ever-evolving soundscape, where sometimes you can catch a glimpse of a note, sometimes you’re just drowning in sounds. I love to experiment with distortion, filters, and whatnot to add more movement to this madness.
