Last year I spent some time thinking about what I’d like to do this year and planned for some time in Europe, starting in Austria. I also thought about how I became a well-known pastry chef early on in my career and I needed to go where cakes and pastry are truly celebrated. Cake and Pastry is an art form. I decided that on my last day I would have a luxurious lunch at the Hotel Sacher, so I could try the original Sachertorte in the original setting. And what a beautiful lunch it was. I really loved the addition of the popsicle and the apricot schnapps was so soft and beautiful. Pretty perfect lunch I’d say.

A great day in Vienna starting at Joseph Brot and the Leopold Museum to a spectacular dinner at Gasthaus Grünauer thanks to my friend Monika Caha for setting us up and to Christian and his wife, Katja who is the chef and is so good. My friend Leonie and I really loved every single dish and wine and this very special schnapps. Just wow!!
Tafelspitz sulz which is an outstanding head cheese with lentils vinaigrette
White asparagus with nettles sauce
Blood sausage spring roll with apple-sauerkraut
This goulash with spatzle was to die for
And it got even more exciting with elderberry flowers (very seasonal) fritters and poppy seed filled crepe
And the wine pairings were perfect
I would eat everything Chef Katja Grünauer makes and whatever Christian would pour!
And this schnapps! A truly nforgettable dinner🙏🇦🇹

Best time with @destilleriefarthofer ❤️over the last few weeks in Austria. Learned a lot and really appreciated everybody’s time.
Of course, I managed to fit in as much cooking as possible, and wanted to make a fun going away party to thank everybody, a love letter, really. Made lots of Roman style thin crust pizza and tacos specifically because I wanted to make tacos de lengua and real guacamole (not pre packed!)+ other sides & salsas + a cocktail I made with @drinktmaro date Eau de Vie and Farthofer aged rum and Mostello +lime juice
Made this chocolate date walnut cake and Farthofer whiskey chocolate toffee sauce 😋

Obsessed with these self serve regional specialty shops. They have anything and everything you might need and they are all local products and crafts. And they are open often 24 hours or close to that. It’s just the best. I was cycling so I only had a tiny backpack so I could only buy a couple of things yesterday in Grein.
