Since I’m sure some folks will wonder why the answers are the way they are (no dm’s, no promo etc) and I haven’t really talked about this anywhere, I also wanted to offer the why! I will not say it was easy to fully unplug from the phone, and obviously I’m still accessing these sites off of it (I do live in the world, after all, lol) but I went from face-constantly-in-screen to caught up on commissions and reading Capitalist Realism with my tea. Kind of life changing habit-rearranging ya know? I highly encourage you to think about a total detox if you’re interested :)

The Knight and The Moth - chromatic edition! I’ve been playing around with color a ton lately and wanted to see what this piece might look like with a limited palette. Now that it’s getting warmer the blues are starting to call to me.
I truly still think about this book like once a week though lol. Sybil and 🌶️Rory are just all time favs for me (and tbh Bartholomew too) and I cannot WAIT for book two.

The Knight and The Moth aka one of my first five star reads of the year and the first fan-art I’ve made in a lonnnnnng time because I was just THAT moved by it (and, I wanted to show of Sybil being as strong as possible ehehe)
One of my favorite parts of creating a new piece is the research. I love to plan what elements I want to bring in, what references I want to make, what poses and compositions I want to absorb. This pose, for example, is majorly inspired by a painting of St George by Solomon Joseph Solomon and I love the many layers of using that ref. The “helpless” princess changed from cringing to raising her mighty hammer and looking up to the threat. The dragon gone, the “saintly” knight only standing to support his lady. No dragon under heel, but poor sweet Bartholomew keeping vigil with a moth alight on his fist full of keys.
Even placing the omens behind them in the stained glass was purposeful, because if I’m not telling stories within stories, I don’t want it!! I suffer from a very serious disease, Horror Vacui, and I take that seriously lmao.
Anyway, I had fun with this, I adore this book, Miss Rachel you are a queen amongst queens, and I cannot wait for book two!!!

I had the absolute best time working on the map pictured with @tessonja for her newest release, The Lies That Summon The Night. We started from scratch, worked out locations together, and planted as many little Easter eggs as we could fit in there. I adore this kind of methodical, careful, almost “studious” work and I was so excited to team up with @bookloversforliberation and @kingdomofthreads to auction this off to an author!! Full suite commission with commercial rights included so you can stick this sucker wherever you like, haha.

I recently saw a quote that stopped me in my tracks - “Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see they do not remain as they are.” It’s attributed to a few people and places, but I’m not sure the actual genesis, and I’m not sure that matters.
I think what matters to me is that when I look around at my online and IRL communities, I don’t always seenAnger. And I’m not sure we can really have Courage without it. I see sadness, and fear, and absolutely no hope. But that is what they WANT. They want us hopeless, and nihilistic, and repeating to each other “we’re cooked, we’re cooked”. Chat, we’re not fucking cooked. Not by a long shot.
Who are you to roll over?? Who are you to let their weapons of fear and sadness get in the way of your action? Get ANGRY. I know for a fact the people in ICE detention centers, in Minneapolis, in LA, in Portland, in whatever corner this regime is punching down in - they are ANGRY. They have no choice but to have courage. They are fighting with their bodies and their lives, and so too should we.
I can’t speak to everyone and every experience and every nuance but I can speak to the people I know and say we need to have hope and faith in a better future because we are going to aim our Anger and our Courage at it and make it so. Please do not let them win with fear-mongering on whatever fuck-ass social media platform you’re doom scrolling on. I love you and I’m holding your hand when I say that a lot of us (white ppl) are only now facing realities of our country that have been true for a long time (the whole time) and we need to put on our big kid pants and get to work. 💛
