The Jackson County Commissioners are discussing removing the Jackson County Library from the Fontana Regional system. This would destroy all funding for 6 libraries including the one in Sylva (the building is included in the photos). The FRL system is under attack. If this happens, we would lose these libraries and over 80,000 people would lose access. Sign the petition in my story to save these libraries. If you are local stay connected and go to any upcoming meetings and rallies. Libraries provide so many important community resources, not to mention free access to information. Plus this IS the corner stone of Sylva. Don’t let them change it into something useless. Message me if you would like any of these photos or to remove an image of you. #jacksoncountync #saveourlibraries #publiclibrary #northcarolina #sylva #readmorebooks #readabook

Did you perform your civil liberties this weekend? Over 1,400 protests happened yesterday. For those in Jax, there was one, also another in St. Aug. I’m very tired of not seeing the people I know not talk about politics because they don’t want to be bothered or they don’t think it’s appropriate… Things are going to get far worst for us if we do not step up to talk about our civil rights, the economy, the environment, social services, federal budget cuts, health services, mass layoffs, and much much more. Cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will be devastating to so many older folks, disabled folks and special needs. Not to mention for younger folks (like me) aren’t guaranteed any sort of stability in our future. I know people who would be homeless without these services. I am going to protest for as long as they let me. And I can see those who aren’t speaking out. These people (probably you reading this) who don’t dare bring anything up bc they don’t want to stir the pot. I’m telling you to pick up the pot and throw it against the wall because right now silence is complicit. I am going to keep protesting and if you think I’m being dramatic, you need a wake up call. Arresting a woman with legal documents, on a visa, by wearing plain clothing and stalking her apartment all day is some dystopian f@scist level bullshit that should scare you. Everything those in power is saying should scare you. April 19th is the next protest… see you later alligator

Western North Carolina - Photos from Asheville, Cherokee, Sylva, Bryson City and the surrounding areas from the past few years before the storm. Last week, Hurricane Helene hit west Florida, Atlanta area, Tennessee, SouthĀ Carolina, west North Carolina, Virginia and some surrounding areas. Asheville, NC was almost completely wiped out. Here are some things I have learned and experienced while in w. NC: Slow moving storms combined with the hurricane hitting the area with rains for over three days (the hurricane outer bands were hitting Asheville BEFORE it technically made landfall in Florida) caused the rivers to overflow, and overflow even more. Not to mention the rivers would continue to run due to rain waters coming down the mountains. 4 inches of rain hit Asheville before the hurricane did. Helene was more than 300 miles of tropical storm force winds. This caused mudslides; landslides; trees to be ripped up; and cars, trucks, and trailers to be swept away. Buildings were just gone; people’s homes and businesses. Power lines down, fiber optic cables to be ruined, bridges destroyed, highways blocked, and more. Anything along the French Broad River is gone (and I mean literally gone) or destroyed by flood damage. What did this cause? Homes, businesses, trailers destroyed. Flood damage to the roofs of some homes and the first story on many buildings. 2 million people across these states without power, which is down to 370,000. In w. North Carolina some people are without water, others have a boil water notice. We lost wifi and cell phone service since the storm has hit. The only way to contact people is to drive to a neighboring town that *might* have some sort of service. We are talking mountain roads, not too many highways, a lot of backroads and if you combine that with the damage I just described – nearly impossible in some areas to reach help or to let people know they are safe. We’re talking completely isolated for days. Many people are missing, some might be fine due to just not receiving any signal but many are probably dead. As of right now over 160 people died across the states. There is very little left in Chimney Rock… #hurricanehelene
