✨ Big news… I wrote a book ✨ Seeing my name listed as an author on Barnes & Noble is a dream come true! 📚 The Perfect Match is my debut picture book—a reimagining of Cinderella with a soccer twist and LGBTQ+ representation. It’s being marketed as: “An adorable, action-packed spin on Cinderella featuring lots of soccer and a prince with two royal dads.” 👑 The inspiration goes back to my very first year teaching at GW. I listened to Grace Lin’s TED Talk on “Windows and Mirrors.” Windows let us see into someone else’s world, while mirrors let us see ourselves. That idea completely shaped how I read and choose books for my students. 🪞 Growing up, I only had windows—I never saw families like the one I hope to have someday, with two dads, or strong gay role models. I wrote The Perfect Match to give kids that mirror, while also showing that LGBTQ+ families come in all shapes, sizes, and interests. In this story, they just happen to love soccer! ⚽️ I’m incredibly lucky to have Dan Taylor illustrating this book—he recently illustrated for Chasten Buttigieg (Mayor Pete’s husband!), and his work is stunning. Today I can officially say that I’m a published author. It’s hard to put into words exactly what this particular story means to me now, and what it means to both my future self and my past self. Every year in 2nd grade, I tell my kids to take a fairytale, and to change something to make it their own. I figured if they can do that why can’t I? So I thought about what fairytale I would have needed to see as a kid; and what fairytale ending I want as an adult. Coincidentally they went hand in hand. As a kid I needed a story that showed that families come in all different types. I needed to see a masculine gay role model. I needed to know that it was okay to love sports and fall in love with “Prince Charming.” I hope that this book does that for just one kid someday. As an adult, this book signifies just as much. It’s a window into the wonderful family I will have one day. I also wanted to give a special shoutout to my family, boyfriend, friends, pets, agent @readbakehost , illustrator @dantaylorillustrator , editors and everyone involved at Nosy Crow @nosycrow @nosycrowus , and GW community.
