Taipei’s 潮電 ChaoBar&RecordStore had its soft opening on November 20 in the historic Taipower Building. This reimagined space blends electronic music, design, and social vibes, creating a fresh haven for DJs, designers, and vinyl lovers. Curator Jesse Chen describes it as a “listening-focused space” featuring electronic vinyl collections from Berlin and Tokyo, alongside curated books, magazines, and a genre-inspired menu. With intimate performances, vinyl parties, and immersive exhibitions, 潮電 ChaoBar&RecordStore aims to elevate Taipei’s electronic music scene and foster a close-knit community. 潮電 Bar&RecordStore 特別企劃｜台電文創《60Hz STEREO/RETRO：千瓦之後∞ 電氣回聲》 開幕派對 完整影音正式上線！ 開幕派對演出由潮電 Bar&RecordStore 策劃駐店 DJ Andy Chiu 與 AP-C，以 Friends of Friends（FoF）DJ B2B 現場影音演出，作為80週年開幕派對。 FoF 由 DJ 與攝影師 AP-C 策劃，長期在潮電店內進行，以 B2B 的方式邀請不同世代與風格的創作者共同演出。兩位 DJ 在同一個場域裡交替選曲、即時回應彼此，音樂不預先設定方向，而是在現場即興展開。 B2B（Back-to-Back）是一種透過選曲來回對話的過程，一人一首，有時延續，有時轉向。節奏與氣氛在過程中不斷被轉換，也讓整場演出保持開放與變化。 本場演出結合影像與聲音，隨著電力的匯集與流動持續轉變，也回應電表玻璃回收與再製的過程。演出內容將於活動後上線至潮電 YouTube 頻道，作為現場之外的延續。 台電退役電表手工音響｜Yanko Audio Lab ChaoBar&RecordStore × TPCreative 《60Hz STEREO/RETRO: Beyond Kilowatts ∞ Electric Echoes》 Official Opening Party Video Now Available Initiated by DJ and photographer AP-C, FoF is an ongoing series at ChaoBar&RecordStore that brings together artists across different generations and musical backgrounds through the format of B2B performance. Rather than following a fixed direction, the set unfolds through spontaneous exchange, real-time response, and continuous shifts in rhythm and atmosphere. In DJ culture, B2B (Back-to-Back) is a conversational form of mixing: one track leading into another, sometimes extending an idea, sometimes disrupting it entirely. The result is an open-ended flow shaped collectively in the moment. Combining moving image and sound, this performance responds to the circulation of electricity, as well as the dismantling and reconstruction process of decommissioned electric meter glass. Electric meters let us see the flow of power. Electronic music lets us hear it. Since 2020, we have been entering Taipower warehouses and power plants, recording infrastructure hum, mechanical vibrations, dismantled meter parts, and fractured meter glass. Within these spaces, we began to realize that electronic music had already existed there long before us, hidden inside machinery, metal, energy, and electrical systems. These field recordings were reconstructed into a sonic work built from decommissioned power materials and operational sound environments. From infrastructure hum and mechanical noise to signal oscillation and electromagnetic resonance, the project reconsiders the power grid as a listening experience. Throughout May, we will host a series of listening sessions exploring electronic music and the hidden rhythms of electricity through four curated records. Featuring “Daba,” “4-7-8 and ”Milk Harbour,“ the EP centers on raw acid techno, driven by 4/4 rhythms, twisted synth lines, and a gritty sonic texture. 【 When the Vintage Relay Sings 】 Taiwan Power Company turns eighty this year. I disassembled their decommissioned relays, tested the components one by one, and rewired them into new circuits. These parts, mil-spec capacitors, Mitsubishi transformers, tantalum resistors, and hermetically sealed transistors, once belonged to Taiwan's power grid, running inside aging hydroelectric plants for decades. Now they sing. Paired with handmade birch Tractrix horns and Altec compression drivers, the system is currently on exhibit in Taipei, open for listening. I'd like to take it further. To let people outside Taiwan sit down, request a song, and hear how the industrial memory of a subtropical island sounds.
