Gradual, diploma project by @chansperle
How we perceive and interpret the world is influenced by scale—by the distance, size, and the spatial relationship between observer and object. This project explores how scale influences meaning and perception through an experimental dialogue of type design, photography, and visual art. At its core is Gradual, a typeface that remixes Ladislas Mandel’s Galfra and Adrian Frutiger’s Roissy, reversing their original scale of habitat. In collaboration with artist Pai Litzenberger and the design duo Scinema (Leidy Karina Gómez Montoya and Tonda Budszus), the project expands the typographic concept of optical sizes from nano to macro dimensions. Together, Gradual offer a multi-layered reflection on our spatial interactions with the world.

Arc is a display typeface (for now) that explores an unusual approach to stroke contrast by introducing a slight rotation at the joints. This detail adds a subtle humanist quality to its otherwise rigid structure, which is more or less based on a revival of a 16th-century Ascendonica by François Guyot that I worked on during my first semester at MATD. As a result, Arc retains some distinctive features, such as the single-serif M and double-serif N, while incorporating influences from Monumentalis Capitalis in terms of stroke width contrast. I decided to push the classical proportions towards more even horizontal proportions to meet contemporary expectations. In addition, tapered diagonal stems and simplified terminals, as seen in the lowercase y, contribute to a more modern interpretation. The italics are inspired by Guyot’s original work, combining his fragile upstrokes with the upright’s triangular uppercase serifs and drop-shaped lowercase. This combination creates a deliberate contrast between the upper and lower parts of the lowercase letters, reinforcing the theme of the uncanny and combining the historical references with what I feel are more contemporary design choices. Thanks to @alice_savoie for feedback and mentoring and basically everyone in the class for answering my annoying questions and helping me make decisions in moments of doubt :3

𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 – 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 was a 7-day workshop with students of the humanities and natural sciences.
After learning about calligraphic writing models, each student developed their own designs. In short inputs we talked about rhythm and negative space, about the relationship between a tool, the body and the shape, about systematization and consistency.
Thank you @studienstiftung for having us!
An autobiography in type through memories in word images on a wall. My height of a memory sets the position, the light is a guide. In the documentation, texts are layed into the corresponding word images, making them fragments of the whole.
Thank you for the meetings and conversations @julia_born 🔭
CS Orbris is a custom typeface for the fictional Orbital Debris Disposal Corporation [ODD Corp.] realised in Kai Bernau’s optical sizes course in @ecalmatd . It comes in a text and display style.
While in the text style the stencil slab combo is kinda tamed down for a more (or less) even texture in body copy, I exaggerated the features for the display style in a calligraphic way to fit to the overall theme. The initial character shapes were inspired by Bruce’s Antique Primer No. 2 from 1844 and then modified in the style of Ed Benguiat.
Danke beaucoup to @kaibernau for the mentoring 🚀

Loosely inspired by the Keystone Foundry’s „Cardinal Monotone“ from 1899, I recently pushed some pixels to get a low contrast oldstylish typeface with a smooth texture in longer texts (still wip though). For now it comes in two styles: A book cut for body copy and a stencil variation for more display use.
Here it’s in use for a fictional editorial project done with @marielusa – merci for the mentoring and feedback 💫

Since the beginnings of written language as a medium of communication, letterforms have been constituted in long processes of adaptation and endless iterations. A wide variety of writing cultures and systems emerged all over the world. However, if one observes their various forms of expression on a medial level, they are somewhere very similar in their development. Writing as such was primarily shaped by the ways of writing (socio-cultural factors), and the associated writing tools and carrier materials (technological innovations). But what if we look at written letterforms independently of these developments from a new perspective, namely as self-expressing entities?
