Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki first released their eight-part video series, 2 Lizards, on Instagram, inspired by the monotony of the pandemic lockdown. Featuring two shiny, anthropomorphic lizards as its protagonists, the computer-animated series follows their lives in Brooklyn. Blending documentary and fiction, the short, three-minute episodes explore shifting emotional states during isolation and quarantine and reflect on social fractures and their intersection with systemic racism laid bare during the pandemic. 🦎 2 Lizards screens this weekend as part of our In Focus programme on Meriem Bennani. 🔗 Discover the full programme and book tickets @icalondon Curated by Myriam Mouflih (@myriam.mouflih ) & Abiba Coulibaly (@_a__biba ) Images © Meriem Bennani & Orian Barki, 2 Lizards (stills), 2020. #MeriemBennani #OrianBarki #2Lizards #Pandemic #VideoArt #Bouchra

On this day five years ago, the Whitney unexpectedly temporarily closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Just a few days later, the first of an eight-episode video work called 2 Lizards by Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani premiered on @meriembennani ’s Instagram. Today we’re featuring Episode 7 of 2 Lizards. 🦎 The film, later acquired by the Whitney and on view at present, depicts a surrealist view of the early months of the pandemic as it unfolded in NYC. It highlights the helplessness and uncertainty experienced by many at the time, as well as the unexpected moments of shared community and connection. — Orian Barki and Meriem Bennani, 2 Lizards (excerpt), 2020. “For Aicha” is the culmination of years of filmmaking, between documentary, autofiction, and cinematic narrative. The film expresses the potential for animation to produce psychological and political nuances. The personal experience of Bouchra, the main character, is built around a humorous and touching story through a blend of documentary rhythm and 3D animation. The film is co-directed by #MeriemBennani and #OrianBarki with the creative direction of #JohnMichaelBoling and #JasonCoombs, and is on view in #Milan within the “For My Best Family” exhibition until 26 February - Credits @meriembennani @changeme2012 @jmbjmbjmbjmbjmbjmb @half.boy

“For Aicha” is the art film co-directed by #MeriemBennani and #OrianBarki with the creative direction of #JohnMichaelBoling and #JasonCoombs that blends documentary and 3D animation languages to tell the story of Bouchra, a 35-year-old Moroccan jackal and filmmaker as she writes a film exploring the impact her queerness had on her relationship with her mother The decision to feature animated animals is an intentional way to deliver profound messages by using innocuous-seeming vessels. The narrative form of animation thus becomes a powerful device for addressing current topics in an inventive and intriguing form. The work is part of the exhibition “For My Best Family” by Meriem Bennani, on view in #Milan until 26 February 2025 - Credits @meriembennani @changeme2012 @jmbjmbjmbjmbjmbjmb @half.boy
