التحطيب Tahtib originated in Ancient Egypt as a military martial art, depicted on Old Kingdom walls as combat training for soldiers. Over millennia, it transitioned into a stylized folk dance central to Sa’idi culture in Upper Egypt. This art form serves as a vital expression of regional identity, symbolizing honor, bravery, and chivalry. Performed at festivals to the sound of the mizmar and tabla, the dance preserves its warrior roots through rhythmic and choreographed stick-fighting. Clip from the film “Egypt Dances" audio-visual component of the doctoral dissertation "A documentation of the ethnic dance traditions of the Arab Republic of Egypt", by Magda Saleh, 1979.

Knowledge Legacy The Lawh (لوح), also known as Allo or Walha, is a traditional wooden tablet central to Islamic education across West Africa. These boards serve as a primary tool for the transmission of sacred knowledge, where students master the Qur’an through the rhythmic art of calligraphy. Beyond their educational role, they represent a cultural link between Islamic tradition and African material culture.

El Fasher satellite view / Abbas Habiballa 1960s Photography El Fasher, once a refuge in Darfur, is now the site of a massacre, with fires and bodies visible from space. The Rapid Support Forces, directly backed by the UAE, continue their attacks, while other regional powers and European actors lend political or logistical support driven by access to Sudan’s raw materials. #sudan #السودان

Tribute to Alexandria’s Tram The blue tram lives in every Alexandrian’s memory. As this heritage yields to modernity, it challenges our perception of progress. How can we advance urbanistically without cultural erasure, keeping the soul of our history alive?

Various forms of targeting affected archaeological sites and historic buildings. Some were heavily damaged, and others completely destroyed."
